Sir —Having made reference to Mr A. '■ Stuart at the hustings at noon to-day in answer ■to an ulVewivis remark wliich I thought he had made, but which I found was made by his , brother, I now desire to make tho atlini* honorable, mid to say that I deeply regret \ having made the remark. In company with 'r Mr Stuart I have seen the gentleman who lni formed me of the action said to be discreditable on the part of Mr Stuart; and though he repeated the statement to Mr Stuart, and 1 n-ave his authority for making it, I now feel v convinced there has been a mistake. I therea foro deeply regret having made it, and desire o to withdraw it, as I now "believe tho whole d matter rests upon a misconception, and I sinir cerely apologise to Mr A. Stuart for the anu »i"Yi\nw which the statement has caused him. Penult mv also to say that I accept tho ex1, ulanation which lias been given of tho pay, tmoiit mftdo by Mr Davis as to cab hire, and itlelnoerely ragwt that in this and in "another

instance named to mo by a committoeman, his action should hrye boon misconstrued. I regret and apologise for the pain which this misconstruction has caused to ]\ir .Davis.

If, in this my political noviciate, and smart-

ing under tho unnecessarily severe comments of a portion of tho Press, I have said anything which has offended or wounded any other person, then I now sincerely apologise. 1 hopo all my critics and censors will accept this

apology, and while I might say a little in extenuation I refrain, and trust that all

aggrieved persons will accept this aclcnow lodgment.—l am, &c,

M. W. CiREEN'
