CAVERSHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tho usual fortnightly meeting of the Caversham Borough Council was held on Thursday evening, when there wero present -The Mayor (Mr Bridgman), and Crs Holmes, Cochran, Bridgor, Wilson, Calder, Barron, U'Ren, Gilniour, and Broadfoot.
The Retuniing-ollieor(Mr Pearce) intiimVcd that Mr Vf. Bridgman hiid been elected Mayor for the ensuing year.
The Finance Committee reported that- (lie sum of £212 13s -I*l had boon placed in the Hank pince last mocti* g, and recommended the passing of accounts for payment to tho amount of XIV, Us Id.-Report adopted. The Works C-.mniiHoo reported that the clerk had been instructed to call for tenders for rood formation on Corstorphino road, and for the right of icmo nig timber from tho street lines in St. Clair Park. Having considered .Mr It. Phimester's letter, and beard the inspector's report, the Committee considered tho_cxplanation satisfacsory. With regard to the application Of the St. Kilda Borough Council to put a drain across the Bay View road, the Committee had granted it, subject to the work being done under the supcrvi.-ii-.il of the inspector, and to the condition that the diain should only be allowed to remain during the pleasure of the Council. The clerk had been instructed to inform Ml- 11. Lane that the levels of Brunswick terrace would be taken in tbe course of a few weeks. Tho letter from Mr Burman, secretary to the United Fire Brigade, had been considered, and the Committee recommended tho Council to decline the offer of the Brigado to attend fires at Kensington for the sum of £20 per annum, hut that if the Brigade should attend any fires in that locality the Council would pay any reasonable expense incurred. The Committee further recommended that Ihe Council should appoint a special committee to consider the advisability of reestablishing a fire brigade in the borough. Mr E. D. Davys' request to remove a few loads of soil from Victoria street was granted sub jtct to the supei vision of the inspector, and the clerk was instructed to inf**rm him in reply that tbe surveyors were about to take the permanent levels ol the streets In St. Clair. The Committee recommended the formation to its permanent level of ihat portion of tho Forbury road opposite St. Clair, now that the St. Kilda Council had finished the works in progress on that road. Tho inspector had been instructed to cut the gorse hedge on tbe Forbury road, also t<* improve the approach from the beach to Beach street and the Esplanade. Tho Committeo recommended the Council to tike over the street-lines in the lirst subdivision of St. Clair.— Report adopted ; ami a committee consisting of Cr U'Ron, Barron, Bridgor, nnd Broadfoot wero appointed to take steps to re-establish a fire brigade.
Mr James Healey's application for the removal of earth at C*i per yard was referred to the Works Committee to report.
.Mr Macdonald wrote statin;,' that he was prevented from finishing his contract, and asking that his de-po**it-monc.v, and M,i 3s for metal laid down, be reluinKd.—Request granted. Mr D. Froudfoot's'communication rr tho supply of tramway tickets to working men at reduced rates was referred to the Tramway Committee. Messrs Kenron and Hosking applied to have tbe plans of St. Clair signed by the Council—Application grunted. Tho samo firm ftbo forwarded a cheque for £100 in consideration of tlio streets in St. Clair being taken over by tbe Council. —Received. Jlessrs Keid and Duncans applied, on behalf of Jlr Smitb, for the sum of £600 for tlie amount of hind taken lor the purpose of widening L ling street.—The Council refused to entertain the application.
Mr Pearce, tho town clerk, was appointed Return-ing-officer for Middle Ward, and was also instructed to make a valuation.
It was resolved that Cr Bridger wait on the Postmaster with a view to having a posting pillar erected noar the Benevolent Institution.
Tho Council went into Committee on the consideration of tenders, and resolved to accept Messrs A. and T. Buit's tcnJers for contracts 2 and 3 in connection with water supply, in the sum of £211 15s and £757 16s 2d respectively. Mr William BJagdon was appointed Waterworks Inspector. _^_________
