AIR GREEN AT ALBANY STREET.

TO TUX EOITOJI.

Sir,—The remarks made by Mr M. W. Groen at tho Aliiany street Hall on Wednesday evening relative to your leading article and his opponent, Mr Daviß, should effectually settle any chance he (Mr G eon) had of being returned as ono of the city members.

Any man who stigmatises a mere opinion, given In all good faith, as a " lie " is clearly not a at person to represent any constituency in Parliament. Such language is more befitting the "gamblers" spoken of by the candidate.

The continuation of Mr Green's addross U in keeping with his attack upon yciu. Mr Green calls himself a Christian aud a teacher of Christianity, the chief article of tho Christian religion being loyo or charity ; yet this Christian (?) descends to a low atta-k upon an honourable opponont, showIng himself to bo a veritable wol( in sheep's clothing. There is little charity under the white necktie of such a man. If .Mr Green is sullicient hypocrite' to preach lovo to air men, and yet falsely accuse a felloiy clergy, man of leaning upon'ganiMcrs for his chief support, he is utterly unfit to sit In any parliament. ' I trust that tho electors will show their contempt for1 such a character by rejecting him. I neither know, nor anr I known j "to either candi-. date.—l am, 4c, Elector. Docembor Bth, ' . A

TO TUS EDITOR. Sir,—l havo hitherto believed that Mr W. M. Qreon, whatever his deficiencies might bo as a politician, wua at least a man of fair education auci competent uiuterRiding. _ ' •' . .

! On perusing, however, tho report in this morning's paper of his meeting iv tho Albany street Hall last evening, I find him using terms fo utterly wido of their real meaning that 1 cannot but think he cither' Uofli- cs to make a point a?afnst your paper in tho minds of unthinking or uneducated men at tho expense of his own sincerity, or that he himsclf'is involved in «uch confusion of thought as to the mbanirig of one of the simplest terms used in tho English language as to indicate that after all Mr Grcon is not that person of intolligenco I have hitherto taken Win Tho following is a quotation from your roport of his spoech:—"'Why,-there was the biggest tie (italics mine) in that day's paper that ever was uttered. :I6 was said in the loading; artido that had had tho city not been divided into distiiets Mr Davis, Mr Uoss, Mr Dick, and Mr Cargill would have beon certain to got iv; Tin re had uovor boon a greater or more uublushinjr lie told in tho world than that." i Sir, I can hardly beliovo my eyo3 whon I road the sentences.

'A lie ia a wnful uttering of that which tho. iitterer knows to bo false,, and can In tho naturo of things ouly refer to matters of fa^t. Th»t tho Oi-prossion of au opinion that certain candidates would have been successful in certain circumstances BhouW ba characterised as "the biggest lie that was ever uttored, &c," is perfectly monstrous I truet that Mr Green, for tho sake of his own reputation, will withdraw tho obnoxious sentences. Hard hits ia the political waitare aro to "be expected and may bo justiiied ; but, as our excellent Colonial Secretary gaid, let them (lbo aboro tho belt."- I am; &c., . ■ . UIIPIBS.
