THE ELECTRIC LIGHT IN MELBOURNE.
Three months ago tho Eastern Market wag illuminated for tho first tiino by the electric light. Pour burners were placed at different parts of tho building as a teat of the strength ; tho gas was turned down very low in fact almost out, and the electric lights were found to work admirably, and it was then plainly to be seen that a few more burners would have tho eifect of giving a great light. Since then the Company have put up live more burners —namely, three under each division of the main roof, making in all nine. The only unpleasant effect it has produced is that of dazzling, but that is now provided against by tiie use of ground-glass shades, made in a square form. Opal globe shades wero tried, but it was found that they absorbed some 50 per cent, of tho light, and therefore they had to be dispensed with. The light presents no longer a stellary appearance, but is more like that of tho moon when full. From tho general expression of opinion and the number of people that nightly crowd tho market, it appears very popular. One more light is to be placed near the clock, or facing the main entrance from Bourke street, which will complete tho contract. It will be interesting to know that the cost of the lighting is £03!) annually. The contract with the gas company amounted to £1450 annually, so it will bo evident to all that a great saving has been effected. The expense for the hrst year will only amount to £939, allowing for machinery expenditure. After the first 12 months tho cost will bo only £700 annually. Tho reduction is very great, and tho light in every respect superior to that of gas. Tho Klectric Company are now preparing for the erection of a central electric station, which is to bo built next to the Academy of Music in Bourko street oast. When this is completed they will commence to light a number of business places in Bourko street, together with tho Victorian Arcade, They also purpose putting up stations in various parts of tho city as the demand for lighting increases. —Melbourne Herald.
