London, September 12th,
A telegram has been received from Borne announcing that a great landslip has occurred at Elm, in the canton of Gflaruß, Switzerland. Nearly tho whole town is buried 3 and over-200 persona have been killed.
News is to hand from Persia that several severe shocks of earthquake havo been experienced at Khoi, a town in the north of that country, causing considerable destruction to property and some loss of life.
Tlireo per cent, conaols have declined ;}-, aud are quoted to-day at 99. New Zealand securities are unchanged, at tho following quotations : —Fivo per cent. 10-40 loan, ]02^ (ex div.) ; 5 per oent. 1889 loan, 102£ ;4i per cent. 1879----1904 loan, 99}. Tho market rate of discount haa fallen i per cent., to 2-f. The bank rate is unchanged at 4 per oent. Colonial breadstuffs are without quotable change. Australian tallow remains at last quotations. Scotch pig-irou has advanced Od per ton. No. 1, f.o.b. in the Clyde, is quoted | to-day at 49a. At the wool sale to-day 10,700 bales were catalogued, making a total of 173.807 offered BJince the opening. A fair demand was experienced. Paeis, September 12th. Intelligence is to hand from Tunis reporting that the French troops recently despatched to the seaport of Soilaa in consequenoe of the threatening attitude of the Arabs towards the inhabitants, havo now arrived at the town and have occupied it in force. No oppositibii was met with foeni the Ar»baj,*ho had retired from
the neighbourhood before the arrival o* the troops. Further telegrams announce that a strong body of insurgents have occupied Teboulber, a small port a few miles south of Sousa, and have taken up a strong position. Alexandria, September 12th.
It has transpired that Cherif Pasha has definitely declined the call of the Khedive that he should accept the Presidency of tho Council of Ministers. He informed his Majesty that he could not consent to submit to the dictation of the military.
The crisis in this country continues to increase, and the mutineers in the army are now assuming a most menacing attitude.
Calcutta, September 13th.
Telegrams to hand from Afghanistan announce that the Ameer's forces have arrived within eight miles of Candahar, and are encamped in a strong position. It is further reported that hostilities have already commenced against Ayoub Khan, and that the Ameer's artillery has opened fire on Candahar.
New York, September 12th.
The drought which has existed for some time past throughout the States has now broken up. Heavy rain has fallen during the past 24 hours. Washington', September 12th. Telegrams received to-day from Long Branch report that President Garfield has suffered a relapse. His physicians further report that one of his lungs is affected, and his condition ia again deemed most critical.
Ottawa, September 12th.
At the international sculling regatta at Toronto to-day, the race for single sculls was won by Ross. The consolation race was won by Edward Triokett, of Sydney, beating Gardner and Hosmer.
