SPECIAL TELEGRAM.

(FBOM OUR OWN OOKEESPONDENT.)

, - Auckland, March 4th. I The Herald, referring to Messrs Grant and Fosters negotiations re the !|Te Aroha block, says:—"Measr? Grant and Foster do not appear to have behaved well. By both the Government and Board they: were treated in W spirit of extreme liberality,,ther only effect of which seems to have been to induce further demands: Although .everything haß been conceded it is not quite certain that we are yet out of the wood. From - the correspondence" apparently Messrs Grant and Foster were at one and the same time squeezing the Government and the Board, and the latter were in ignorance of the nature of the negotiations with the former.""Only now is" information given that this negotiation is similar; to those with Mr Yesey Stewart. The public were certainly under the impression that Messrs Grant and Foster were acting for others as well as for themselves, and for these others were" agents. It was understood that the price of-the land paid by settlers would be that arranged by Measrs Grant and^Foster, but for all that .appears to the contrary, they may. be merely speculators, and may exact from those they represented; what price they think fit. One thing is quite certain, that so far as negotiations are concerned there is nothing to prevent them making the land their personal speculation." :
