A beautiful morning ushered in the first Say's races, and as a consequence there was a large attendance on the coarse.

DERBY STAKES, Jk. sweepstakes of 8 soys each, with 75 soys added; second horse to receive 20 soys from the stake 9.

There was a good start. Sylvaous, on the inßide, led by half a leugth nearly to the Btand, which they passed stride for stride. They ran thus to the back of the course, where Sir Garnet went to the front. His opponent, how ever, closed with him again almost immediately, *nd the two raced together to half-way up the straight, when Sir Garnet got his head in front, and won eventually by a neck. Time, 2 mm. 58 sec. There was no betting on this event -either in the open market or totalhator.

Five started. Bonghleen Dhoun was quickest on his legs, and led past the stand, followed by Herd Laddie and Jack's-the-Lad. At the back of the course Beauty, who had been lying luck, went up and took second'place, which she maintained to the finish; Laddie was third. Jack's-the-Lad was completely outpaced. iTime, 2 mm. 58 sec.

There was not much betting, but Bonghleen Dhonn was a hot favourite.

The horses got well away from Mr Howell'a starting. Luna cut oat the work, closely waited .on by Hilarious; Atlantic third, Sylvanus bringing up the rear. They ran thus lor about a mile, when Atlantic fell behind, his place_ being taken by Sylvanus, who wa=i well tip with the leaders. As they passed the stand the eecond time, Luna still continued her lead till the last turn,_ when Hilarious made his effort. It was a clinking race home between the two, the favourite just beating Hilarious on the post by a nose, amid cries of. "Dead heat 1 dead heat!" bo exceedingly close was the finish. Sylvanus was a fair third. Atlantic, who ran unkindly, was never dangerous. Time, 4 mm. 34 sec.
