DRAUGHT STOCK. li, ? « ? ugbt horses this year'« show excelled a ?l last y,ear> The entries were numerous and the quality was really far above the average. In only one class was there a falling off. lhis was m the three-year-old entires, the two shown being of no great merit. In the younger entires, however, the reverse was the case. Some of the stock was of a sort that would fetch very high figures at Home. The marcs that were B hown were also of a remarkably good quality, and daring the day the greatest interest was taken in tho judein"— each a treat in the way of an exhibition" of horseflesh not often being experienced. There were cix competitors amongst the all aged entries, amongst them being Mr Menlovo's recent importation from the Home country Prince Vhtor. This horse came in for^a deal of admiration and was awarded first prize by the judges. He was in tha grandest of condition, and shows breedicg at every point, - !u an« i mme, nB! chest and resn» with great girth of barrel; but he has a droop in the back that many don't like to see, although it is a characteristic of true Clydesdale breeding ; and is short in the barrel also. His fore and hind quarters are all that could be wished, and altogether he is a very fine spedmen of the Clydesdale. The stock he left at Home are making a good name for themselves a yearling havmg recently been purchased by Lord .Dunmore, the well-known breeder, at a high figure, »nd one of his three-year-olds «wg s Tn £ ird h2? ou? at * "cent horse fc{ v London- ,M' Jan>«< Shand, with Taien Tom, waa placed second. The horse was not looking very brilliant, and was a trifle lame, else there are many who think him well 6ul ltlei u° * raDk Prince Victor although he does not show hi, b, ee dfag to anything like the same extent He is an oxce^Jmgly well-topped horse, very powerful, and i clean made, standing any amount of inspection. Mr Blair's Rob the Ranter was third. He has a bad pair of hind legs, although otherwise a good useful stamp of a home. He was close run by Mr Peter Grant's Young Clyde, and the other entries were Young Lord Paisley and / AJ J?Z d '. Only two three-year, olds entered the ring, and the red card was given to Mr Bannatyne's Royal George, by Sir Oeorge Grey. He was in poor condition, but he showed well below, and has great bone. Out of eight two-year-olds shown, the best were decidedly Mr Menlove's pair by Boag's Prince Charlie, and bred by himself. The bay one took first prize and the brown second. Both were really grand gpecimens, and should bring high figures. The bay is a particularly fin! mover. Mrs Nimmo's dark bay, Prince Louis, was third; and amongst the others was a taking Sir George Grey colt, shown by Mr K. B. Ferguson, which laboured under the disadvantage of giving the others two and three months in age. Mrs Nimmo had the best of it i n the yearling division, one by Emperor Napoleon scoring first, and another by Prince Charlie second. Mr John Sbaw's Emperor colt took third over the head of Mr Gait's exhibit For mares in or with Ifoal there were five entries • but Mrs Nimmo's famous old black mare Blossom could not be beaten. Mr Shaw was second with Nelly Blythe, and Mr Charters third with his well known Lothian Kate. The three-year-old filly class wag represented by eight competitors, comprising a ring of as fine exhibits as ever have been brought together in the Colony. The judges took a long time over their work ; but in this class their award was not by any means universally applauded by the public. A big black filly shown by Mrs Nimmo secured the award, bnt there could be little question that Mr Menlove'a Mamrie Lauder 2nd ahould have beaten her. The latter is a model mare, showing the most thorough quality at every point, and was bought from Messrs Fleming and Hedley by her present owner at close on 200 guineas. Mr Charters got third prize for a shapely, well-grown filly named Wa?gow Maggi3, which «*»< i many admirers- H"4- zri~'% v liau 80nJewnat light bone. m. outtons Madam, a bright bavo£ e ™t size, was commended—a*«™ was also a grand di«nl ?y -ot-*«ro yearold fillies, nine being in MrSnft A V 67 l*ettJf bay by Mr Sutton, was deservedly given first honours, hue shows quality everywhere, and would make an excellent match for Mr Menlove's S wff UV. fJer-fV, Mr Pe mer ' 5 f ?, takia ' waß 2 ZtlJ? orouSWj; good filly-a bright bay; and Mr Gow was third with a well-topped one Sh a J P°f o Way below* MesßM Menlove were thf m? Four pairs of carriage h£n» were shown. Mr Geo. M'Lean^ Kenger and King, a very well matched pair, but » little wanting fa quality, took first prize ; and the second pr,ze was taken by the Hon. H S. Mr Philn also obtained Messrs Sinclair and Alorton's specif pma for the best buggy howe on the grounds the prize being given for Native Cat.
HACKNEYS. Only two classes of hackney horses were well contested. For the first class-entire horsethere was but one entry, Mr N. J; B. Mac gregors Harkaway, but the judges considered the horse worthy of a first prizs, as he showed plenty of Bubstaaco and wa3 a fair eoer. Thera ™l?l °^ Pf itfT #* the priz9 for hackney mar ß and foal, Mr George Dodson being the only exhibitor, but in this case also the judges considered the -fint prise merited. There was shown. Glass 6-lady's horse, mare or gelding—was the best-contested class on the grounds, and S° T?/<^ of the JudSes was a difficult one. Mr D. M Master's Black Bess and Duchess receiyed first and third prizes, and Mr Philp'u JJolly Barwon second prize. Messrs Davidson, Dornwell, and Gourley'a exhibits, were also very creditable. Black Bess is an excellent mure, and was particularly well ridden, but some consider that Dolly Barwon would have taken the first prize had she received the same amount of education as Black Bess.
_, COBS AND PONIES. The cobs and ponies were a fair class, but the day was so unfavourable that they could not be shown to advantage. Mr Goldle was the principal pnze.taker, but Messrs L. Hazlett and A. Mollison and Co. also took firat prizes. There S "stytr! 8 °f C°bS and P °nieS« " aSaiDßt
_. HUNTERS, ETO. bix hunters were entered. The first priza was °arrled °ff by Mr Petre's Turk, and the second by Mr Percy Jones' Le»p Year. There was considerable discussion amongst the judges as to which horse should take the first priza as some of them considered that Mr Petre's Turk jumped so awkwardly as not to. b» entitled tO lw „,. — ■*"■
The leaping n»tck was fairly contested, the how^jmnpiag well. Mr A. G. M'Dermott's Roland took first priae, and Mr Taggart's Dandy second. The greasy nature If the ground however, was against thepropercarryini? on of the competition, which came to an end rather hurriedly in consequence of the death of poor old Kildare. He was being ridden by Cotton, and camo down over a hurdle, apparently getting one of his fore feet between the bars. The old horse was got on his feet again, *nrf I °. nly i wal, feed » few steps with difficulty and then lay down and died from his injuries at a spot just a few yards beyond the winningpost in front of which he had so often carried Mr Gourley'g colours to victory. The leaping match for horses ridden by ladies did not takl place m consequence of the inclemency of the weather.
PIGS. There was an improvement in the show of pigs, there being 16 entries, as againit five last RX A8 f PT-l O- Usl7' M/ R- Wiakfield was the largest exhibitor, and his pigg, which are principally of the Berkshire breed, took nearly all the prizes. Mr Shand did not compete. Mr A. Dornwell obtained a first prize for a good bacon pig and his pen of fat porkers were commended. Mr R. frinkfield's prize bow took second prize last year, and the rest of his exhibits were very fine young pigs of the same «?if f A £ I eedi. n« B°WB were also excellent, and took both prizes in their class
« , . DOGS. Only about a third of the number of dogs shown this year were entered, and there was ye™ Uttle competition There were Do oollb?
