Sib,—lt is to be hoped the people of Dunedia will take acmii steps in order to retain the services of Inspector Mallard. Anyone who has watched the way ia which Mr Mallard has fulfilled his duties can come to no other conclusion than that he has done it most faithfully. I Bay a more zealous and efficient police officer is not in New Zealand. If any Civil Bervant deserves promotion Inspector Mallard does ; but instaad of being promoted his services aie to be dispensed with. I sak you, Sir, is that not altc gather too bad ? lam well aware the Government have a difficult task to perform, but for all that, we mustnot have the verybest men in the service picked out for dismissal. Comparisons are odious, otherwise I should make one. —I am, &c,
