; Auckland, October 12th. ] The Borough Council of Parnell presented its Mayor with a silver cradle. The Justices of the Peace have deputationed ', Mr Whitaker, asking that Sub inspector Pardy be restored to bis former position of sergeant- : major. Mi Whitaker promised to refer the matter to Wellington. ; ; A sergeant in plain clothes shortly com* mences enforcing the compulaory clauses of the Education Act. .

Captain Purvis, of H.M.S. Daoie, received ft telegram from Commodore Wilson instructing him to leave Auckland on the 18th inst. for Fiji. It is probable that the Dans, and not the Emerald, will bring down the new Governor.

The recent gold discoveries were in a block of 7000 acres allotted ai a Native reserve. The Government are taking steps to verify the discovery.

The yacht Pearl capsized off Kauri Point, and a boy named Day was drowned. There was near being another fire in Onehunga yesterday, which was fortunately checked before it gained headway. It was alao close to Roe's sawmill, and broke out in the shingled roof of the Government buildings known as the Native hostelry. A hole was completely burned through the roof before the fire was extinguished. The origin of this fire is also attributed to sparks from the sawmill. At a meetieg of tha creditors in the estate of Captain Kenneth Kerr, the liabilities were stated at L 2244, the only asset btinof a reversionary interefit ia England worth L4OOO. The interest, however, it is stated, the debtor unsigned to bia wife about 18 months ago. The mail steamer Australia has arrived, bringing the Lord Abbot AloDck, the Rev. Mr Fox, and some lay brothers belonging to the Dominican Order, who have come to fuund an establishment in connection with the order in Auckland.

Wellington, October 12th. Mr Mansford h&s received 12 months' leave of abser.ca, and visits England. It is understood that he will draw full pay whilst he is on leave.

: Hokitika, October 12 th. Andrew Ross, ferryman at the Mikonui River, wag drowned this morning while crossing it with two loaded packborses. He was sitting behind one of the packsaddles, and in the middle of the largest stream tha load shifted. It is supposed he was thrown suddenly into the river. There was p, freak at the time, the current was strong, and he could not recover himself. His body was found about 6 p.m. The deceased w»3 a pensioner of the Royal Navy.

Chbistohcrch, October 12th. A meeting is to be held on Thursday to form a company to construct a railway irom the Hurunui to Rec-fcon.

Last night the premises of Samuel Stewart, pawnbroker, were burglariously entered, and five gold watches and one gold brooch stolen from them. Three men have been arrested, and a fourth is wanted.

A man ejected from tha White Hart Hotel last night used a knife upon tbo landlord and night-porter, inflicting flesh-wounda. He was brought up at the Court to-day, aud the case was remanded.

A letter having appeared in one of the papers referring to the rumoured change of magistrates, and reflecting on Mr Bewick's capacity and impartiality in connection with his sitting at Rangiora, a number of the Bar and residents today took occasion, at the Rangiora R.M. Court, to disavow any sympathy with the opinions expressed.

About 10 o'clock last night the shop of Samuel Stewart, pawnbroker, which is patt o£ his dwelling-houae, was broken into by the shutters and front window being smashed. Five gold watches and gold brooches, which were hanging in the window, valued as about L6O, were stolen. The thieves decamped before they could be seen, but information wag speedily given to the police. About 10 minutes to 12, Constable Dongan, who was on duty in Oxford terrace west, near Montreal itreet, heard it woman calling for the police. He went round to the back of Messrs Medley and Walker's premises, and found that thb kitchen window of Mr Medley's house bad been _ broken, and that three coats that were hanging ia the kitchen had been stolen. From what he gathered, he went to an outhouse near at hand, and. found three men apparently Bleeping in the loft. One of the stolen coata was found neac them, and ke arrested the three on tfae charge of burglaroualy entering the dwelling. After leaving the men at the depot, he returned to the premises, where he found a biscuit tin containing the watches And brooch. The men were brought up at the Police Court this morning, and remanded till Monday. Captain Barry attempted to give a lecture at the Gaiety Theatre to night, but the audience interrupted him, and pelted him with Bg>;8 till he waa forced to retreat.

Timaku, October 12th. A contractor named John Hall, while blast, ing at a Btone quarry a few miles from Titnaru last evening, had ona hand nearly blown off. A farmer named Thomas Jefcoate had several fingers cut off to-day by c circular saw. A new side school in Timaru, capable of holding 300 pupils, will be opened in a day or two.

Oamaku, October 12th. The first engine crossed the Maerewlienua bridge to-day, and entered Dantroon. It is not long since the Duntroon-Hakateramoa line was commenced,, and it is being pushed forward with expedition by the contractors.

Gore, October 12th. A well-attended public meeting was held last night to consider the Government's action ia dismissing Inspector Fox. It was unanimously resolved that Messrs Shanks and Bastings, M.H.R.'s, be requested to use their influence to retain Mr Fox in the force.

Invercaeqill, October 12th. By a fire at Mr J. B. Sutton'a farm at Garryowen a large Btable, together with the prize bull and the stallion Pablo Fanque, was destroyed.
