THE LATE FIRE AT WAITEPEKA. TO THE EDITOR.
Sib,—" Practical Christianity " draws attention to the severe loss sustained by Mr Wood at Waitepeka by fire, and seems anxious to pet on foot a subscription list in aid of the unfortunate. Wood was uninsured. If he had been, it were not necessary to make an appeal to the charity of the public. I would point out to generous minded individuals that their charity
in such a case will be somewhat misplaced Mr Wood, for a comparatively small sum (as his grain was all threshed and in a bavn), cpuld have placed himself beyond tha necsa sity of such a lowering appeal. " Penny wise and pound foolish" is a maxim of which ho seems to have been ignorant as a warning beacon, although ha seems to have followed ita principle ; and without deprecating charity altogether in this and similar case* (such would bean unchristian feeling, truly), I think the public should exercise some disciimination.—l am, &c.
An Insukbd Ohe.
