A large and important preliminary meeting was held in the Town Hall today for the purpose of. insisting on the construction of tho railw ay between ;the East and West Coaats. : The Mayor was in the chair. The Hon. Mr Bonar 'made a speech" pointing out the advantages of constructing1 the line. A quantity of new and valuable statistical information was placed at the disposal of the meeting by a number of merchants and others present, showing • that this railway would be as payable a line as I any in the Colony; while the West Coant poa- i lessed an asset in the unsold Crown lands that of itself would more than pay tbe cost of the 1 railway. It was stated roughly that there were ' 100,000 acres of land between the Teremakau and Grey Rivers alone, which, if a railway was 1 made, would easily realise from L 4 to L 5 per i acre—or a sum more.*than Sufficient to defray the whole oost of thei line. Carefully-prepared < estimates were given, showing traffic amounting J to ■ several thousand pounds per annnin altogether omitted or under -estimated in Mr 3 Blair's report*. Energetic action to get railway > made, was determined bn, and it waa resolved « to ask Greymouth, Kumara, Christchurch, arid i other towns interested to co-operate earnestly.
