MB MACASSEY. TO THE EDITOR.
Sib, —As Sir James Maeassey] is seeking again to be returned to the House iof Representatives as oar member, I think,it worth while spending a few minutes in;considering his qualifications. I trust you. will think it worth your while to have the result' of those considerations published.".. '■''- . ! Is Mr Macaeßey coming forward to benefit the electors, or to make a beautiful-blend of hia own interests with the interests of the constituency, or to benefit himsilf only ?, .In reply, I ask another—What haa Mr Maeassey done .to show tbat he, is anxious to benefit the electors ? I believe lam quite cafe in stating; that the.only times he has appeared in public, or taken any interest in public affairs, have. bsen when, be thought himself sure of being paid for that appearance. We all know that he has appeared often in the Courts as counsel for unfortunate litigants; we may take hia own evidenco to show that_ he has been paid, or expected to be paid, in money, iti money only, and had a grand (?) contempt for any honour that he might obtain by a bard fight, eventually proving that his opinions were correot. and his client had justice onbis side.— (Fide 0. D. T. retort, liaoass6y and Co. v. Cameron.) . > .■ Ue has alio appeared-in publio on many political occasions, but these have always been wben be has. been standing for election himself, Whan has he been* known to support a friend (and surely we must assume that be had some), or when has he taken the trouble to do or say anything for the benefit of anybody, except solely in his own interest? I, at ail events, know of none; therefore, as we can only judge of what he ia likely to do in the future by what we know of him in the past, I think we may safely assume tbat he is not coming forward to benefit the electors entirely, that he,is not coming forward to benefit them at all, and that he is oomlbg forward solely for the purpose of benefiting himself. Is this the sort of mau the eleotors intend to return as their representative, in the Parliament of the country ? Brother electors, say to bim once again, No I An Eleoiob,
