CHARGE OF WIFE-MURDER.

A prisoner named M'Lennan was to day oommitted for trial on a charge of poisoning his wife. Tiie caae has occupied tho Resident Magistrate's Court all the week, and bus excited great public interest. The most imp* rtant additional evidence given was that of a woman named Macdonald, who knew the | risoiitt* .it Geral-:.'iue. He told her before bis wife's death that bo was over beaci and card in debc, and had pai-sed » forged cheque, but th:.t he had managed to keep nis wifo in igu* rai.ee ol his troubles. After her death ho again appeared at witness' house at Patangata, arid remurkei lhat it was a good job his wife *was_ oat of the way, as he was free to go to Africa. She afterwards iound that there was suspicion of his wife's murder, and told bim so. He said, with some curiosity, " Could they detect poison so long after death ? No, I loved her to much to poison her." He also said that it an attempt were made to arrest bim be ■would shoot the policeman, and showed her a revolver.
