The Otago Daily Times WITH WHICH IS INCOROPORATHD THE OTAGO GUARDIAN. WEDNESDAY, .JANUARY 8, 1859.
It is of very little importance, outside a very small circle, what JVIr Wakefield, M.H.R. for Geraldine, says on politics. He has earned for himself the unenviable reputation of havingsuch elastic political views—we cannot designate them principles—that they may be expected to be changed about once in j every twelve months. For the sake of
ue&intereat, and that by the cherishing of purer motives and higher ends, the best ana most permanent well-being of a country is secured. I have no hesitation in saying that he has done more for this country than could be accomplished by a session of the wisest legislation, and will, as the age moves on, rma a place among the heroic benefactors ot mankind." After further remarks, Mr Seager continued : "The treatment the native race has received from the present Ministry has not only been one of justice and conciliation, bus also one recognising the manhood of theae races. Sir Geo. Grey recognised the natives as men having rights, and would give tnem more rights, not as a favour, but as the only right thing to be done by man towards man. This is perhaps his highest honour. Knowing, as we well do, how demoralising to both istne government of a conquered by a victorious race, we here may feel both satisfaction and pride in this example."
