WEST TAIERI CALEDONIAN SPORTS.
The West Taieri Annual Caledonian Sports were held on New Year's Day, in the pleasantly situated piddock, at Woodside, kindly granted for the purpose by Mr Gow. The weather waa all that could be desired, which enabled the pleasure seekers to thoroughly enjoy themselves. About 600 were present. Tne sports consisted of the usual Caledonian games, interspersed with a few races for the youiigsters, which caused lots of fun for them. The programme of which consisted of sixteen event j, was arranged by Messrs W S Aitken and Jas Ho well, assisted by a Committee from the Outram Lodge of Oddfellows. The Oddfellows met at the Society's Hall, Outram, at 11 a.m., and formed a procession, headed by the fine brass band of the West Taieri Volunteers, under the leadership of Mr John Iveson. They then marched to the scene of the festivities, reaching there about noon, when all partook of substantial refreshments provided by a Committee of the Oddfellows' Locige. About 2 o'clock the sports began, and were as follows: —

John M'Leod, with 3i)ft 4m; 1; Neenlleid, with 38£t0in, 2. I Handicap, 300 yda—Nine entries. John M'Leod, 1; R M'Leod, 2. Throwing the Hammer—Nine entries. W S Grant, 81ft 4in, 1: 0 Henderson, 73ft 2in, 2. Vaulting, for Boys under 14 years.—Twelve entile?. Isaac lieed, 1; Carr, 2. Potting the Stone—Six entries. Jas Bannerman, 30ft lOin, 1; J Palmer, 29ft 7in, 2. Walking Match, one mile—Four entries. This was an exciting contest, three out of four entries being brothers, who are noted athletes ia this district; at the finish William M'Leod put on a spurt, and came in first by a few ittchs:B of his brother Alexander, 2; John, 3; all close together. High Leap—Seven entries. D Grant (Cray), sft 4:u. 1; Keen tteid, 2. Vaulting—live eutiies. Neenanßeid (9it lin), 1; James Reid, 2. UiitLs' llaoe, 100 yds- 30 entries, M'Kenzie, 1 ; M'Lsod, 2 ; Weir, 3, Handicap, 200 yds — Fourteen entries. Neenau Raid, 1 ; R Gibb, 2 ; John M'Leod, 3. Handicap Hack, Oho mile—Ten entries. A Miller, 1 ; J Gibb, 2 ; A M'Leod, 3. Wrestling Match, Cumberland style—Six entries. First Pair—lt Robinson and HPowley. Stood: Robinson. Second Pair—J Palmer and \V M'Leod : Stood, J Palmer. Third Pair—W Palmer and IfiC George : Stood, W Palmer. Second Bout—R Robinson and J Palmer : Stood, It Robinson. Filial Bout—R Robinson and W Palmer: W Palmer won by throwing his opponent twice consecutively. Odefellows' Race, 250 yards (in regalia) — Niue entries. Powley, 1. The prizes consisted of pieces of plate given by D PG Bro W H Cox. Wrestling, Catch-as-catch-can—Three entries. R Robinson, T G C George, HPowley. Robinson and Powley : Stood, Powley, Final —Powley and George. This waa a very protracted struggle, both men doing their utmost for fully half an hour without a fall. Eventually th?y were persuaded to divide. This closed the most successful meeting of the kind in the West Taieri. In the evening the anniversary of the Loyal Outram Lodge was further celebrated by a ball in the Socioty's Hall, Outram, at which figured over 60 couples, who kept the dancing up till about half-past four.
