NORTH-EAST VALLEY BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the North East Valley Borough. Council was held last evening. Present :—The Mayor (Mr Schlotel), Crs Green, Folkes, Bloxham, Moyae, Lamberfc, Frasar, and Short. VALUATION LIST. The Clerk laid on the table the valuation for ths year 1879, showing the valuation for each ward as follows :—High Ward, £3348 ; West Ward, £5251; East Ward, £6505 : total, £15,1G7, Thß rates at Is in the pound would thus be £758 7s. TRAMWAYS. Tho Mayor reported as to the progress made with reference to the construction of a tramway line to the Borough from Dunedin. The committee appointed were using every endeavour to have the business settled aa soon as passible. The matter was left in tho hands oi the Committee. SANITARY. The Clerk, as Sanitary Inspector, reported having written to Mr J. Lgckstone, who was contravening the bye-laws by keeping pigs, and to Mr Ellery regarding the existenca of a nuisance caused by his fellmongery. The Counoil decided to enforce all tho bye-laws. COKRESI'ONDENOE. An application from Mr G. Greanes, of Opoho, lor permission to take a few loadß of earth from High Bank, was referred to the Works Committee.

A memorial was received from five ratepayers residing at Pine Hill, complaining of water flowing from the District road through their properties. —The surfaceman was instructed to attend to the matter.

The Manager of the Colonial Bank wrote iaforming the Council that the Government had placed to the credit of the B trough account the sum of £128 ss, subsidy for the half-year ending 31sfc December, 1878, less £41 deducted for the maintenance of the Daneclin Hospital. gSMr ftochford asked for payment for metal left by him on Macgregor's road when he was carrying oat his contract.—Consideration deferred. A Ittter was received from the Clerk to the North-East Valley Koad Board, asking payment of accounts amounting to £53 2s Bd, due to the Board in accordance with the award made by Dr Knight. • The Mayor stated that hi had instructed the Clerk to refer the writer of tho letter to Dr Knight, who alone had power to deal with the matter. The action of tbe Mayor was approved. A circular was received from the Colonial Treasury, showing the subsidies due to the different boroughs surrounding the Dunedia Htspital, with the doductiona for the maintenance of the Ilospi'al. The Clerk to tho North-East Valley Eoad Board wrote, declining t.i receive an answer as discoutteouß by the borough clerk to his request for books, documents, &v , belonging to the late North E.tst Valley Iload District. It appeared from discussion which took place that the Clerk had written the letter as late clerk t:> tho Road Bjard, aud the matter had nothing to do with the Council. The Mayor was instructed to write explaining the matter. 'FINANCE. An account from Messrs Stewart and Den- Q niston, solicitors, amounting to £33 5s 6d, was reicrred to the Fiuaace Committee, to report at jw?t meeting, T,foe pay-pheet and,

some other accounts were referred to the Finance Committee, -with power to act.
