MEETINGS.
The monthly meeting of the Yorkshire and Lancashire Club was held on the 15th inst in the Empire Hotel. There wm a fair attendance; Mr Rainton in the chair. After the usual business, it was resolved that a committee of three should wait upon the Scotch Societies to consider the advisability of holding a grand amalgamated societies fete. After a pleasant evening, spent in harmony, tho meeting adjourned. Tho annual meeting of the Dunedin Battery of Artillery was held on the lst instant, Lieutenant Muir presiding, The principal business was election of office-bearers, which resulted as follows : —Hon. Sec, Sergeant Denniston; Hon. Treasurer, J. Thomson. Management Committee: Sergeant Peake, Corporal W. Thomson, Acting - Corporals Rigg and Allan, and Gunner J. Mills. Shooting Committee: Lieutenant Muir, Sergeant Peake, and J. C. Thomson, Acting-Corporal Rigg, and Gunner J. J. Weston. Storekeeper, Corporal W. Thomson. A vote of thanks was accorded tho retiring storekeeper, Sergeant Fordyce. The quarterly meeting of tho Caithness, Sutherland, Orkney, and Shetland Association was held in Murray's Temperance Hotel on the 27th ult.; Mr W. D. Sutherland iv the chair. The Committee appointed to receive subscriptions for the widow of the late Mr Yell reported that the lists were now completed, the total amount collected being Ll7O, which sum had been invested for the benefit of_ the widow and children. The subscription list towards the establishment of a Celtic Chair in tbe Edinburgh University was nlso closed, and amounted to about L3O. The sum was ordered to bo remitted by next mail. It was resolved that the annual gathering should this year take the form of a pic nic. The monthly inspection of the North Dunedin Rifles took place on the 2nd instant, when there were present Captain Reeves, 1 lieutenant, 1 sub-lieutenant, 5 sergeants, 2 buglers, and 42 rank and file, including 5 recruits, making a total of 52 on parade. The inspecting officer was Capt. Wilson, of the No. 1 Company City Guards. After parade a Company meeting was held, wben it was decided to celebrato the anniversary of the Company by a ball on the 25th inst., and Corporals Johnston and Waugh were elected to represent the Company at tho Rifle Association. A special meeting of the Dunedin Branch of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners was held at Krull's Hotel on Sth inst., Bro. W. Carltoninthechair,when thequestionof representation was fully discussed, the majority being in favour of "direct representation," and not indirect, as at present. To carry out tbat object, Bro. Tbomas Baldwin was nominated as a candidate for the General Council,
A special meeting of tho Presbytery of Dunedin was held on the 3rd, in the hall of the First Church, to consider the Otago University Bill, introduced into the House of Representatives by ths Hon. Mr Stout. The real question brought in issue by the Bill is whether or not the Synod should have the power of determining what Chairs shall be established out of the Presbyterian endowment, but the ground upon which at least some of the members of the Presbytery voted for and signed the petition to Parliament, was in consequence of the Bill being introduced without tho ecclesiastical authorities having been consulted.
