THE - NEW UNIVERSITY BUILDINGS.

.On the 13th mst. w<T had an opportunity of inspecting plaus of the new University Buildings, which were prepared by Mr Maxwell Bury, architect, of Dunedin. As fa- as the external appearance is concerned, the style of architecture;has been.altered from the Classical to the Gothic The old Botanical Reserve has been selected as the site for tha University The total frontage ivill be 216 ft., but only part ot the work is to be uuder taken at present and this will have a frontage of 123 ft* The eievation will be 36ft., and the depth 33ffc. in the centre and about 75ft. at each wing. The facade is striking and handsome, the balcony near the Council hall and the library window standing out in boklrelief.- Passing into the buildiiig at the main entrance and turning to the left, we enter Professor Shand's room He has four rooms reserved for his lectures on the ground floor. From these we proceed to the janitor's house -with a; private entrance On either side of the entrance the-janitor's offie° or the porter's room is reached. To the ri«hfc we notice-the Professor's waiting room, and%.rhen =t°? bulletin^ is continued we will here find two more class-rooms and trie great hall—t^e examination hail—with a suitable galle tv ~ Proceeding upstairs the left turning leads us to Uie library aud two class-rooms, the Council Chamber, and the Registrar's room. Of course when tue whole building is completed, corresponding class-rooms will be provided. G-oin" through the main building to the rear, we reach the chemical and anatomical divisions .Dn the ground floor of the proposed building 01 thooS ll,ver^ P™per, there are two classrooms 27ft. by 18ft., Protessor Shand's lectureroom 36ft. by 25ft,, and laboratory 25H. by 18tt. Under tneseare the carpenter's shop and instrument rooms. Then in addition there are the Professor's retiring-room, the janitor's house and ofiice, the porter's office, lavatories, &c.^ Each of the class-rooms is 15ft. in height. ; Tho first floor comprises three class-rooms each 27ft. by 18ft., the Council Chamber 37ft' by 25ft.-, the Registrar's room 25ft. by 15ffc and the library 251t. by 56ft.

THE CHEMICAL DEPARTMENT.

The basement floor of the chemical department is chiefly divided into two compartments —a dissecting room for Professor Scott, and a turriace-room with seven fireiilaces for Professor Black's experiments. Each of these reoms is 34ft. by 18ffc.,.and the adjoining compartments will be fitted up for storage, &c ■ -On the first floor will he Professor Blkck's lecture-room 37ft. by 18ft, a laboratory 37ft. bylSffc., a private laboratory, the Professor's room, and other conveniences.
