THE LATE DR BUCHANAN.
The announcement of the death iv London on tho 4th inst. of Dr Buchanan was received with deep and heartfelt regret by his numerous friends throughout the colony, as well as by the public in whose service he laboured as legislator for many years. It may, perhaps, be some little consolation to his children, relatives, and numerous friends, to know the high respect and esteem entertained for him throughout the colony, as is evidenced by the fact that although he ceased being a member of the Legislative Council, that body, out of respect for his memory, adjourned for the day upon receipt of the tidings of his death. Dr Buchanan practised about 30 years iri London, and came to Auckland, New Zealand, for the benefit of his health, about 21 years ago. In 1860 he came to Otago, aad in 18G1 was appointed a member of the Legislative Council. He remained a member of the House until his departure for Europe in 1874. Jn. England he took a warm interest in colonial matters, having been a frequent speaker at the Colonial Institute. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, a Fellow of the Iloyal Colonial Institute, and a Fellow of the Iloyal College of Surgeons. The excellent qualities and genial character of the deceased gentleman were warmly commented upon by the Right Rev. Bishop Nevill during the course'of bis sermon at St. Paul's Church on Sunday morning the 9th inst. The deceased gentleman liad assisted tho Bishop upon his arrival here, and whatever he undertook was rendered more valuable because he could be thoroughly relied upon to perform it. Though he had lived some considerable distance from St. Paul's Church, Dr Buchanan had been most regular in his attendance at the services, ana his earnestness and good example were generally known. The hymns—" Christ will gather in His own" and "Days ahd moments quickly flying," were sung, and- the organist played .'' The Dead March in Saul" at each service.
