CITY POLICE COURT.

Thursday, 25th Januart. (Before I. N. Watt, Esq., E.M.) Drunk and Disorderly.—George Norris and Evan Black were each fined ss, or, in default, 24 hours' imprisonment. Mary Wilson was fined 40s, or, in default, 14 days' imprisonment. SELLINO NEWSPAPERS ON RAILWAY PLATFORAT. William Gilmour was charged, on the information of Railwa/ Constable Price, " with unlawfully selling certain articles—to wit,' two newspapers—on the platform of the Dunedin Railway Station, without the authority cf the Minister of Public Works, and contrary to form and statute." Mr Kettle (of Macassey and Kettle) said: I appear for the defendant in this case, your Worship, and I have to ask you to adjourn it for a week or ten days, as the counsel engaged for the defendant are unfortunately engaged in the Supreme Court, and are unable to be here this morning. _ I : believe there is no objection to the application for the adjournment. Mr A. Batbgate: There is no reason to oppose the application, your Worship: I was instructed only a few minutes ago. I think a week rather a long adjournment; it might be for a shorter time. I understand, your Worship, that the charge is for selling newspapers upon the railway platform, and that the defendant does not deny having done so, but insists on his right to do so. If there is to be an adjournment, it should be upon the understanding that, until the question is settled, no further attempt should be made to sell papers there. I believe Mr Kettle will undertake that that will mot be done. Mr Kettle: I cannot admit th&t any attempt has been made or will be made to sell papers there. lam here to defend the case, and cannot give an undertaking of the kind asked for in regard to Mr Gilmour or anyone else. His Worship: In that case the adjournment should be as short as possible. Mr Bathgate: I now understand that the defendant has been selling since he got the summons, so it is advisable that the matter should be settled at once. Mr Kettle: If the defendant has been guilty of a second offence, the Police can lay another information. His Worship: I don't suppose that it is a matter of very great importance for a few days whether a few papers more or less are sold. Would Monday suit you, Mr Kettle ? Mr Kettle : I am afraid that there is a case in the Supreme Court which will be on that day. I think Wednesday will be a convenient day if there is no obj action. His Worship: I have no power to order defendant to discontinue selling these papers. Mr Batbgate: However, I suppose a day or two cannot make much difference, and tha case can stand over till Wednesday. His Worship: The case stands adjourned until Wednesday, the 31st instant. Wifk Desertion. —James King was charged, on the information of his wife, Bridget King, with having deserted her and her four children. The defendant was fined 2s 6d, and ordered to pay 20s a week towards the support of his wife and family. '
