. (FKOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS ) Wellington, January 25th. The Hineinoa took a hangman aoros3 to Picton last night to execute Woodgate. The Solicitor-General is worried to death for opinions on points daily arising under, the Counties Act and its fellows, and, it is said, finds it utterly impossible to reconcile many ■ or the provisions of the various Acts. A meeting of licensed victuallers is called for to-morrow for the reformation of a licensed victuallers' co-operative insurance society. Many of the hotels find it almost impossible to effect more than a nominal insurance at present, and that at an exorbitant rate. One new house, which has cost £5000, con only get an insurance of £700. Emmet's is the most successful engagement ever played at the Theatre here. The Chief-Justice yesterday, in the course of a case in which plaintiff sued for damages for the result of an accident caused by his | horses shying through being frightened in the. street by a riderless saddled pony belonging to defendant, called attention to the custom of the Corporation labourers lighting fires in the street 3 for the purpose of laying asphalte, and stated that the Corporation would be liable for the results of any accident arising from horses beiag frightened thereat. The plaintiff in this case got £270. His leg had been broken. Eiverton, January 25th. The County Couucil met to-day. Present, all the members, except Mr Dundas, including Mr Robert Cuthbertaon, ths newly elected member for Waiau riding. On the motion of Mr M'lntosh, it was resolved to bring the whole Counties Act into operation. It was also resolved that the Council were favourable to levy a moderate county rate with a view of giving the Road Boards as much control over roads as possible, and assisting' them with as much funds aa it can spare, and that the funds should be divided as equally as possible throughout the County in proportion to the rates collected in the respective districts. The Council has given notice of its intention to levy a rate of fourpence in the pound. George W. Brcdrick was appointed clerk, collector, and treasurer at a salary of £200 per annum, out of sixteen applications sent in for the office. The Council has been sitting all day, and will hold an evening sitting. The other bpsiness aa yet transacted is unimportant. Notwithstanding the very wet and boisterous weathei' yesterday evening, a public meeting was convened by the Mayor in compliance with a requisition re Railways. It was well attended. Tho following resolutions were carried unanimously : —"That this meeting respectfully urge upon the Government the immediate necessity of completing the Western District Railways, as the large expenditure already incurred on these works remains unproductive, and materials are rapidly going to decay, and that it is of the utmost importance that tha works should commence at Riverton. That a memorial be prepared to urge upon the Government the necessity of giving effect to the foregoing resolution, and that the Mayor and Messrs James Mackintosh, Otautau, J. L. M'Donald, M'Gillivray, E. Simpson, sen., be appointed to prepare a memorial to procure signatures to the same."
