TENDERS FOR PUBLIC WORKS.
TO THE EDITOR
Sis—Permit me to endorse the sentiments of your correspondent " X," regarding the. malpractice of docking quantities before making up tenders for public works. This practice has been allowed too long in Dunedin and elsewhere, to the detriment of the many, for the good of the few. Besides, it leads to speculation and monopoly, inasmuch as to encourage all manner of ioul play, from the Legislature down to the publican and storekeeper, as well as the usurer and the commission agent, who are always foremost in the rank; and as for wirepulling, and putting the Venetian blinds on for the time being, cannot be gainsaid. Under these circumstances, the legitimate "but iil-abused" contractors hav^ no show amongst those valtureß of prey. Sir, I trust that you will pay some attention to it. I think a leader from you on the subject would be worth a score of letters, in order to put a stop to this growing evil. Thanks be to the member for the Taieri for his candour in making a commencement in the right direction, and which no doubt will lead eventually to fairplay and honesty, "as in other lands. "—I am, &C" H.M'K.
