INTERPROVINCIAL ITEMS.

Wellington, December 15th,

It is proposed to institute an Academy of Music in connection with the Oddfellows' Hall. A new organ, costing jE9OO, has been received for St. Paul's Church by the ship Avalanche, and it is to be erected by Mr West, of Dunedin. The Police are making another raid among publicans, under the Provincial Ordinance for the prevention of the sale of liquors on Sunday. O'Malley's reclamation contract has been extended to March, when the great additions to the Fielding site will be available. The steamer St. K>lda is laid up at Wanganui, on account of the alleged dullness of trade. The Gazette lait night notifies the resignation of Sir Donald M 'Lean of his office ot Native Minister, and of his seat in the Executive Council. Dr Pollen is appointed Native Minister, retaiuing also the office of Colonial Secretary. He leaves for Auckland in the Hinemoa to-night. Auckland, December 15th. The booths for tbe racecourse sold to-day for £113 ; cards for £45. The Auckland common schools broke up to-day. Owins; to an accident, the crew of Mercury Bay, Auckland, are not likely to be represented in the Champion fours at Nelson. Masterton, December 15th. The are several candidates for the Master. ton Riding, but the electors are remarkably apathetic. Napier, December 15th. A good deal of interest is being taken over the County elections throughout the country districts, the candidates being numerous. Christchuech, December 15th. Mr C. A. Fitzroy, M.H.R., addressed the electors of the Selwyn district at Courtney last night. His speech was little more than a review of the past session. A vote of thanks was accorded to him for his address. Invercargill, December 15th. In the cricket match yesterday, between an eleven from the Riverton Club and a like number from InvercargilJ, the Rivertonians were victorious. L. E. Reade, for Riverton, made a splendid score in the two innings of 81. The elections for County Council are exciting a great deal of interest. Riverton, December 15tb. Alfred Shi»w, a young man, was found yesterday hanging over a boat with his head in the water. He wa3 then quite dead. He was subject' to fits, which are supposed to have been the cause of death.

Oamaeu, December 15th. Great apathy is exhibited regarding the Waitaki County election, although the nomination will take place to-morrow, at noon. There are only two candidates in the field for nine ridings, those being for Kakanui and Otepopo ridings. No one is publicly advertised as yet for the seven other ridings.
