OTAGO UNIVERSITY. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir—There is no doubt the chemical classes in the Otago University tend materially to the advancement of the arts and manufactures of the Colony, by educating young men to a proper and judicious use of the materials in their Business. There are businesses such as jewellery, photography, &c, in which a knowledge of chemistry is very useful, and of two photographers, for example, caeterw paribus, the better chemist is the more likely to swim over the difficulties. Now, Sir, I wish to draw the attention of the University Conncil to the unreasonable hour at which access to the "labora tory is allowed, viz., 4.30 p.m., so that he who is in business and has a desire_ to perfect his knowledge has not on opportunity of attending the afternoon class.
I think that if the laboratory class were held after the chemistry class, or sometime after 0 p.m., it would not interfere with those who can attend in tho afternoon, but be a great convenience to those engaged during the day.—l am, &c, An Intending Student. Dunedin, 21st April.
