THE CHANGE OF A SOVEREIGN.
Some interesting but at first sight ratber startling information as to the changes in weight which gold may undergo in a short time has bueu given by Mr Palmer, the 0-puty Governor of the Bank. Mr Palmer b.iltl the House of Commons Select Committee on Banks of Issue last sessioa that the Bank of Fn eland •weighed coin to the amount of £23.100,000 last "year, and rejected £840,000 ■•■>a Hshfc geld ; and he added that boxes of •-■orrectly weishrd gold sent by the Bank of Kt:c:land to S-JOtlfiud frequently come back
.'•itfaout having been opened, and are then found to have U'idergoae some reduction in "ealit. This Mr Piilcner cxplaius by observ'i!g that the mere shaking of the sovereigns on the journey will rpake a slight difference. There is, of course, a point at which, every -.ovi reign beconscs H«bt, and many sovereigns turn that point ou the journey. Mr Hoilgson, M.S'., a bank director, then stated that in a box of 5009 sovereigns, the number which would be found to have turned the ;>nint was about eit;ht, if they had not been disturbed; and h; added, '"You are aware ?hiit the sovereign which is in your pocket it i iglit o'clock in the morning is not the sovereign at twelve o'clock at right." Twoffen it is not a sovereign at all; but the "change" to wh;eh Mr Hodgson refers is not of so marked a character as is sometimes observed. The sovereign, he means, ins lost weight in th« day. and hec>iaes lighter by mere attrition in the po:-kefc It is to bis feared that rhis information will have a bad effect uoon s.inndthrifts, who will look upon it as an additional reason for anticipating merely phyaicd processes in this respect. "Li:lit come, light ao," haa always been a fnmi hr mr.xim ; bub if it is once known that god ni.iy come he.-.vy and go liubt if kept l-'-nu enough, it is to be feared that it will be made to go faster than ever.
