Landed passengers, and when the tide served an ht.ur or so later she went on to Dunedin. Fine light weather and smooth water -were experienced throughout the trip. We thank Mr Latimer, the Purser, for the report. The Bruce is advertised to leave again on the same round to-day. The smart ketch Catlin arrived from the Bluff yesterday morning, and hiving wind and tide with her passed on to Dunedin. She has made a good trip to and from the Bluff, since the 19th inst., the date of her departure hence. Discharged a full cargo there, aud shipped 34,000 feet of timber for Messrs Guthrie and Larnach, and left on Sunday afternoon last. Had moderate aud very variable winds along the coast; passed the Nuggetson Monday morning, and was off the Heads the same evening, and knocked about with a head wind, very puffy, aud at times c Urn, uutil morning, when a north-easter brought her in. Captain Hannah informs us thai the ketch Jessie was loading at the Bluff tor Waikouaiti. The schooner Rosannah Krse was loading ti nber for Wellington, and the Queen of the Seas, barque, was loading for Lyttelton. The schooner Maggie Pateison ran up to Dunedin yesterday to finish loading for Tin.aru. : The schooner Annie Houlan was towed to Dunedin yesterday morning; by the steamer Shag. The ship W'emiingtoii was removed "from the New Pier and moo/ed i:i the stream above Grassy Point. The ketch Eliza M'Phee is at the New Pier loading bridge material for the Molyneux. The brigtntiue Camilla was accommodated with a discharging berth at the Railw y Pier yesterday. • The steamer Beautiful Star was taken into the Graving Dock yesterday for cleaning and general overhauling. =•.» The steamer Samson left yesterday morning upon one of her bi-weekly trips to Oamaru. . The steamer Lady of the Lake came down from Dunedin yesterday, and after shipping a quantity of heavy cargo at the Railway Pier, left for the Molyneux in the evening. ■ The ketch Defiance, bound to Moeraki, aud the schooner pioneer, to Shag Point, are at anchor off the Port, winit bound.. The appearance of yesterday's weather was anything but encouraging to outward bound coasters. ■ A singular disaster is recorded in the Maritime Register. The ship Haggerstown, whilst loading at New Orleans for Havre, on the 21st April, was struck by lightning, and some of the bales of cotton in her hold were ignited. The hold was flooded with water, but a great part of the cart'o had to be landed before the fire was extinguished. , An instance of bad stowing is recorded in the case ol the ship Lord Ashburton, while bound from Calcutta to Dundee, hau to put back to Calcutta on March 25th, with the crew in a state of mutiny, they refusing to proceed farther in the vessel, on account of hei i. cr*nkne33. She was surveyed., and the result was that the jute, with which her cab n, on the upper deck, was stowed, was ordered to be discharged, and 5C tons of stone ballast put into the hold through the after hatch. : The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council before which the appeal of the Peuinsula aud Oriental Company against tLe decision of the Lower Court in th« case of the owners of the French barque Alcinous v. the Company, affirmed the decision of the Admiralt> Court, which condemned the Comjrany in full damages and costs The facts of the case were simply that the Alcinous, a barque of 345 tons, was on a voyage from Mauritius to Poudieherry in ballast, and, when off the east coast of Ceylon on the morning of the 24th June last year, was ran into by the s.s Hindosian, belonging to the Company, and sunk. It was proved that the Alcinous had her lights showing, and als i that the Hindostan neglected to stop and reverse hei engines, and hence the judgment. The establishment of a'harbour of refuge at Lund} Island, at the entrance of the Bristol Channel, is undei the serious consideration of the Cardiff Chamber oi Commerce. According to the Register, the knotty problem o] fixing a " load line " has been solved by Messrs Thomas Wilson, Sons, and Co., shipowners oi Hull, who have adopted a load-line in the case of each uf their vessels, and as the latter arrive in port they are duly marked with it. The largest and most powerful tug steamer that we ever heard of was launched from the yards of the Wuitehaven shipbuilding Company on the 24th April. She is 130 feet in length ; beam, 21ft. (Jin.; depth oi hold, 12ft. 6in. She was to be fitted at v.reenock with engines of 600 horse power nominal. Messrs Gtorgc Smith aud Sons have added anothei grand vessel to their Calcutta line of steamers. She is ah iron screw steam er of 3200 ions of register, and was launched f;om the building yard of Messrs Barclay, Curie, and Co., of Whiteinch, on the 22nd April. The steam dredge Heathcote, built to the order oi the Provincial Gu\ eminent of Canterbury by Murdoch, Murray, and Co., Port Glasgow, was launched ou the 22nd April. We see by the Maritime Register thit a new lighthouse has been erected on Ragged Point, a little north of the extreme eastern end of the Island of liarbadoes It was to be lighted for the first time on the Ist of Hay last with a revolving holophotal light, giving flashes at intervals of two miuutes. The light is at an elevation of 213 feet above high water, and is visible in clear weather from 20 to 25 milts off. The old iron mail steamship Shannon, built in ISSfI for the Roy,il Mail Company, has been converted from a paddle to a .-crew-biat by Walker, Crouch, aud Co., of Deptford Green Dock. The steamer was further altered by receiving a new bow and stern, and a new compound engine of 700 h.p. nominal. She is vastly improved ; for whereas when a paddle boat, with engines of 774 h.p., her trial trip only gave about Hi knots per hour, she, when driven by the screw on her recent trial trip, attained a speed of nearly 16 knots. The Register describes her machinery as consisting of a compound en^iue of two cylinders, of which the high pressure one was 62, and the low pressure 112 inches in diameter; length of stroke, 5 feet. She has eight circular boilers, and the screw (four bladed) is 19 feet in diameter and of 30 feet pitch. The Shannon was te have left Southampton with the West India mails on the 3rd May.
