PORT CHALMERS TOWN COUNCIL.

The regular fortnightly meeting of the above Council was held at the Hall on Monday evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Rose, M'Gregor, Asher, M'Kenzie, Middleditch, Menelaus, Dodson, and Miller. The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed,, the following CORRESFOXDEXCE was disposed of: — Mr Willis, Under Secretary to the Provincial Government, wrote —" I have been directed to acknowledge the receipt of your letter applying for the registration of the Crown grants of the reserves in blocks 4 and (J, North and Blueskin District, vested in the Corpora- j tion of Port Chalmers by the Provincial j Council Reserves Management Ordinance, 18(58, and to acquaint you in reply that the registration will be immediately effected on payment by the Corporation of the necessary fees at the Land Office, Dunedin." The letter was ordered to be received. Mv Livingston, Provincial Auditor, wrote— " To His Worship the Mayor—By direction of the Hon. the Colonial Treasurer, I have the honour to ask that you will supply me with certain information respecting the amount and method of apportioning the rate in your district. The intonnation, when supplied, will he thrown into a form closely resembling that of the enclosed schedule, and it would be extremely convenient if the schedule could be tilled up by you atonce. I should, however, be glad to receive, in addition, in the shape of notes or re marks or any particulars you may consider of value for explaining the figures supplied. May I ask that your Worship will cause the amounts to be filled in with the greatest attainable accuracy, and especially that the schedule be l'eturned with the least possible delay." t The letter was ordered to be received. Messrs Borlase and Co. wrote,_ requesting permission to transfer the lease of No. 1 quarry to Messrs Samson and Peters. ? Granted. Sir North wrote, asking leave to cross the footpath in Wickliffe Terrace with a horse and cart. .Referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. MEMBER FOR HARBOUH BOARD. A letter was read from Mr J. L. Gillies, Secretary to the Harbour Board, requesting the Council to elect a member for the Board for the ensuing year. Company, have to report that on behalf of theCompany, the secretary is willing toehterinib I negotiations with the Council for the purchase ] of the Gas Works at a price to be fixed by valna— '• tion. Meantime the Company is willing "to conrtinue the contract with the Corporation for the current 12 months at the sams rate as previously, and-the rate being cheaper than the Dunedin rate the Company cannot see its way to reduce it. The Company is, however, willingto withdraw the three kerosene lamps, if the Council-so wishes." A lively discussion ensued, which was frequently interrupted by Mr M'Gregor, wW persisted in his obstructive. conduct, notwithstanding that he was again and again called, to order by the Mayor. Carried. ■; ; Mr Dohson* moved, and Mr Asher seconded^ the motion that Mr Webb be appointed assessor of rates at the same rate of remuneration, he received last year. Carried. r Upon the motion of Mr Asher, it was resolved that the. Revision; Gourt should J}« held on the 14th of next month. Mr Asher proposed, and: Mr M'Kestib seconded the motion, that a letter, be written_t» the Blueskin Road Board, directing the Board's attention to the' road between Port Chalmers and Purakanui, and requesting the Board touse what power it iiossessed to obtain the granfe voted by the Government for the road. Carried unanimously. It was resolved, upon the motion of Mr Mexeeaus, that the Inspector of Works be requested to see about the repairing of Moub£ street . ■ ■ ' ' ■ ; • ''- ■ . Mr Asher called attention to the state of the road and pathway leading to the Railway.
