Drunkenness.—Alex. Thompson, who had some preri«us convictions recorded against him, and Robert lveson, were each fined 40s, with the option of three -days' imprisonment, for drunkenness. On a further •charge of habitual drunkenness, Iveson was sentenced to it month's imprisonment, with hard labour. Illkoally os Premises. —Michael Goldie, labourer, was charged by Thos. Pavletich with being unlawfully on his premises, i he Universal Hotel, on the morning -of the sth inst.—As prisoner had been boarding at the hotel the case wai dismissed.

Embezzlement.—Peter Jamieson M'Gregor, clerk, was charged, on warrant, for having-, whilst in the employ of James McGregor, auctioneer, lnYercargill, received a cheque for the payment of £70 10s 6d, and unlawfully misappropriated "the same.—At the request -of the Police, accuse.! was remanded to Invcrcargill. Sanitary Precautions..—Michael Cox, Jeremiah Dunay, and Mary O'Brien, c ich summoned for neglecting to clean their household premises, whereby nuisances were caused, were each fined 10s and costs. Charges of a similar nature against James Hickev, Fred. Fitzgerald, and A. Larnach were dismissed.

Miscellaneous.—Summons charges against Thomas Healey, of obstructing the footpath in George street ■with a cart; Henry Wni. Neill, for exposing goods for sale across the footway, in George street; and John A. Harris, of keeping an unregistered ilog; were nil •dismissed. James Holmes was fined 5s and costs, for driving a, vehicle through-the public streets after dusk, ■without a light; and Robert Mitchell was ordered to pny 2s Cd a head, and costs, for allowing two cows, his property, to wander.

Obscene Language.—tty Heßarnes was charged, on the information oi' Sergeant Anderson, with using obscene language, en the night of the 22nd December, within the hearing of persons passing by. —Mr X Cook defended.—The Sergeant said he was passing along llaclaggan street, aud heard accused making xise of disgusting and indecent language.—The Bench, in dismissing the case, remarked that if a door or window of the house had been open, she would have been severely punished.—Anne Bonnie, new arrival, was charged by Constable Shirley with using obscene languige in Walker street, and ordered to pay a. penalty of 20s and costs, in default, a week's imprisonment with haul labour.

Theft from ax Employer.—-Mary Fleming, a middleaged woman, was charged, on remand, with having1, on or about the 14th December, feloniously stolen from the premises of Herbert, Haynes, and Co., drapers, her employers, a quantity of drapery goods, to the value of £70 Is lid.—Mr F. K. Chapman defended. —Daniel Haynes, principal of the firm mentioned, said accused bad been in his employment as domestic servant, fur two years, and resided' on the establishment in Princes street. She was discharged by the firm on Monday, the 20th ult., and from something- he heard, witness sent Mr Allan, a clerk, to where accused was living, with instructions to search her boxes, which he did, and returned with the articles produced, which were the property of thejfirm, and .-such as would be used in the dressmakers'dei>artiiient. "Witness jroduced invoices for the goods, which he also gave the values of.—Attention was here calkd to the state of prisoner, who, seated in the dock, seemed to be utterly unconscious of what was going on.—SnbInspector Mallard said she had been examined by the Resident Surgeon of the Hospital, who said she might have been in the same state for months. At the last hearing of the case, accused begged that it should be proceeded with ; but he (the Sub-Inspector), on consideration of her wc-ik condition, would not take upon himself the responsibility of going on with the charge then, and asked for an adjournment. He would simply be guided by their Worships' ruling.—Mr Chapman stated that prisoner was under the in prefsion that the case would be summarily dealt with when she asked that the. hearing be proceeded with.—The Bench did not consider that prisoner was in a fit state to stand the trial at present, and further remanded her for a week.—bhe was carried out of the dock by two constables, apparently utterly helpless. Neighbours' Quarrels.—Martha Lostan was fined 20s and costs, in default, 24 hours' imprisonment, for using obscene language to Jane Hammond, a neighbour of hers.—Win. Edward Hay was summoned "by Jane Alexander for assaulting her son. Case dismissed. A cross-action was also dismissed.
