NORTH DISTRICT SCHOOL.
The usual annual public examination of the pupils attending this school took place on the Bth and 9th instant. On the tirst day, the infant classes, under the Matron, Miss Hay,- and the junior classes, underwent examination ; and yesterday was devoted to the senior classes, all of which gave;very satisfactory results. The measles, and intermittent fevers and colds, which have prevailed within the last three months, have had the effect of greatly reducing the number of children in attendance at this school. The Dumber on the rolls during the last quarter was 482, while during the previous three months it was 548. -■'• ': ■•'' ;• ' ' •', ' In the room used by Miss Hay for the Infant Classes, that lady had a very beautiful display of industrial work, by the girls. There were plain and fancy sewing, wooli crochet, and other kinds of .work, all of which evinced a large amount of industry, taste, and ingenuity. . The Jttev. Messrs Bates and Bavies, and Mr Robin, member of Committee, expressed themselves highly satisfied with the way in which the children acquitted themselves. They complimented' them particularly on their knowledge of -grammar, geography (especially ISTew Zealand), and arithmetic. The discipline in thi3 school, although good before, appeared to have greatly improved. The singing was a great treat, and some of the recitations were decidedly above the average. The boy (Samuel Park) who recited Barbara Fretchett, acquitted himsely admirably. Mr Robin distributed the prizes to the j two senior, classes, and made some welltimed remarks. The school was then dismissed until the 18t.h January, 1875.
