Yesterday was a wretched day so far as the weather was concerned. There was an incessant downpour of rain from morning to night, the continuation, in fact, of the rain which commenced on Saturday night, and has continued .«««.? intermission ever since. The habitues of the Port term the weather a proper easterly burst, and anticipate its continuance a day or two longer. We regard it as the efEects of the Equinox, and with our nautical friends, scarcely expect a favourable permanent change for some days at fewest. Excepting the discharging of the mail steamer Albion, shipping business of all kin.ls was suspended yesterday.
The schooner Pioneer arrived from Shag Point yesterday afternoon. The increasing wind and sea obliged her to clear out from the Point at noon, and that, too, fcefore she had completed loading. Hence she brings only 20 tons of coal its usual for the Steam Dredge. The following notices of the six largest steamers afloat may be interesting to our readers:—The Great Eastern, owned by the International Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company, is 692 feet long over all; beam, B. feet 6 inches; and across the paddle boxes, 119 feet; nominal horse-power, 2000 ; tonnage, builders' measurement, 24,360 tons. The City of Pekin, Pacific Mail Steam O>, is 6000 tons, and 423 feet long; 48 feet beam. The Liguria, Pacific Steam Navigation Co., is 4520 tons; 460 feet long; and 45 feet beam. The BrUa'inia, White Star Co., is 4700 tons; ■455 ft long, and i sft beam. The City of Richmond, Inman Co., is 4600 tons, 453Mt long, and 43ft beam. The Bothnia, Cuuard Co., i 5"4500 tons, 425 ft long, aud 42Mt beam.
The schooner Zior is still at anchor at the Port, waiting for a favourable slant of wind to take.her to sea.
The schooner Mary Ogilvie, bound direct to Greymouth, is loaded and lying ready for sea at the Rattray street Wharf. She will sail as soon as the wind changes. The brigantine Sea Gull, timber laden, from Bluff Harbour, arrived in port early yeste.day afternoon, and being favoured with a strong N.E. wini and flood tide, went on to Dunedin. The Jane Anderson, laden with timber, arrived in port yesterday, from Havelock. Owing to the bad weather of yesterday the sailing of the s.s. Albion was postponed until to-day. Passengers are to go down to the Port by the 12.30 train. The Wallabi, for the Bluff, was to have sailed to-day, but her departure has been altered to to-morrow.
.We believe that telegrams were received in town yesterday respecting an accident, to the Harbour Company's new steamer Bruce at Lyttelton. We are led to believe that there has only been some trivial damage to the machinery.
