-In the import market business has not shown much animation to-day, very little general activity being experienced. The tobacco sale in the forenoon was the most prominent feature, and calls for special notice, inasmuch as though the terms were cash, some 076 packages found buyers at very full rates, tens : realising Is Id to Is 4d ; lives,:• Is Oid to Is 3}d; halfpounds, lOJd.to Is OJd; pocket-pieces, Is 2;Jd to Is '3Jd ; arid twist, Is s^d to Is 7Ad. The market for breadstuffs'is not-lively, and there is little.to report privately. ; Flour in bakers' lots continues to move off :slowly at £13 10s to £13 12s (id, bags returned. :Uncter the hammer,' this forenoon, about 16 tons jwere .cleared off at £12 17s 6d to £13. Wheat is not dealt in; but on the other hand, offerings are too.trifling to induce buyers to come forward. A sriiall lot of medium was disposed of publicly at 5s 9d For prime we quote up to (is. We note a much larger business as having heen done hr oats. 'A small lot of Californian was disposed of by a\ietiori at 4s lOd. Privately; a line'of 12,000 bushels changed hands.on terms withheld. 1500; bushels Tasmanian' were placed at 5s to 5s Id ; and a line of 1450. bags Tasmaniin is also stated to have" been taken up. Maize has firmed under the influence of short supplies of late, and quotations, according to quantity, have been run up again to 4s 9d to ,4s'9 Jd. Malting barley has been quitted at 6s. Sugars are very firm, and a further impetus will be imparted by the offer, to-mor-row. pf,500 tons of the Yarraville refined. There is a decidedly-less globiny'feeling in commercial circles than has prevailed sine« the Lauucestoh failures first became spoken of, and this notwithstanding that the; facts disclosed, in the following telegram (kindly placed at our disposal by Messrs Lyell and Gowa'n) are even worse than was at first anticipated/ It. is now; stated that Peters, Barnard, and Co.'s direct liabilities are £55,000; contingent, £150,000; raukfng on estate, £160;000 ; free assets, £15,000. Edlin and CoJ's liabilities to Melbourne creditors are £ISOO-; and on account of .accommodation,. £9000; assets, £2000. Brand's liabilities to Melbourne creditors, £2300; and on account of accommodation,- £10,000-; assets, £2000. Nichol's liabilities to Melbourne creditors, £2000 ; for accommodation, £5000; to' bank secured, £6500; assets probably £10,000. Hubbard's liabilities to Melbourne creditors are £1400; to Lauriceston creditors, £1000 ;.and for accommodation, £9700; assets, £2000. Rumours are afloat as to other houses having stopped, but in the meantime- no definite information has been received.
