INTERIM SECRETARY : • , James Mills, Esq. This Company has been formed for theptirpose of providing more efficient steam communication, between the different ports of New Zealand—the want of which has been felt for some time past, and is becoaiing more perceptible as the growing trade of the Colony is developed. It is proposed to float the shares principally in the Provinces of Otago and Canterbury, as the; class of enterprise is one in which they are specially interested, and in which they have not hitherto occupied the position they are entitled to from their latge share in the trade of the Colony. It is desired to establish a weekly line of steamers between Otago and the principal Northern Ports, to put on a steamer between Dunedin and Ihe West Coast Ports of the Middle Island, and also to provide for the efficient conduct of the trade to and from the several smaller Ports on the Coast of Ofcapo and Canterbury, for these pnrposes the following new vessels will be required :— Three first class steamers for the trade between Dunedin and Manukau, to be built in Europe, and. capable of carrying from 400 to 500 tons , of cargo, fitted with compound engines and the latest improvements, and with superior passenger accommodation suited to therequirements of the present day. The steamers will be of such a class and speed as will ensure every facility to shippers of goods and con venience to the travelling public. One boat of smaller capacity and lieht draught . water, especially adapted to the trade to the. ' ■ West Const of the Middle Islana. - With a view to commencing operations without delay, it has been arranged to rake over, on the Ist o2 January next, the steamers Maori, Beautiful Star, and Samson, belonging to the Harbour Steam Company's fleet, and also their new steamer-just built on the Clyde, specially for the Tiraara and Lyttelton trade, and which is expected to arrive in the Colony early in February. These vessels will at once create a revenue for the Company, and, it U believed, will be sufficient to carry- on the trade of the ports on the coasts.of Otago and Canterbury. The terms on which it has be^n agreed to take over the Harbour Company's plant are exceedingly favourable to this Company; the new boat is to be taken at CGst price, and the Maori, Beautiful Star, and Samson, at ■a- price to be arrived at by a valuation of the boats by Mr Walcott on behalf of this Company, Mr Mills on behalf of Harbour Company, with Mr A. W. Morris as third valuator, and to lie agreed to by the Provisional Directors, with a bonus added equal to their estimated profits for three months, to be verified by an examination of the Company's books by Messrs Walcott, Cargill, and Morris. This Company will receive an ample equivalent fox the bonus so given, in t*Ving possession at once of a well-estiblished and profitable business, and securing all the benefits of the Harbour Company's connection and experience. Mr James Mills, who has so successfully conducted the business of the Harbour Company from its commencement, will continue to act as Manager of this Company. It is estimated that to carry out these proposals a capital of .£150,000 will be required, and to provide for this it is proposed to call up £4 per Fhare, making a total of £100,000, and to borrow the remaining £50,000 on debentures bearing a 1 w rate of interest. This arrangement will enable larger dividends .to be declared on the paid up capital. Out of the total number of shares, the proprietors of the Harbour Company will take 7500 paid up to the extent of £4 eacli^and the remaining' 17,500 are now offered to investors. In recommending this investment to the public, the Provisional Directors may state that large profits are now being made by steamers on the coa-st of New Zealand, and they are therefore confident that by the employment of vessels of the character indicated; fitted to work with the utmost economy, and meet the growing traffic without undue strain, the Company will be able to secure.ample, profits, and at the same time promote trade anil the convenience of the travelling public, by providing improved facilities and accommodation at reduced rates. Applications for Shares will be received by the Interim Secretary, at his office,' Harbour Chambers, Dunedin ; and by Messrs Miles and Co., Hereford street, Christchurch. 20n PROSPECTUS OK THE TTPPER WAIKAIA GOLD-MINING \J ; COMPANY. Offices: TEVIOT AND SWITZERS. Bankers :"'■■' THE NATIONAL BANK OF NEW ZEALAND. Broker: J. B. BRADSHAW, Esq., Temple Chambers. The richness of the auriferous deposits of the Upper Waikaia are sowell known as hard'}'to require comment, the present Company has been formed for the purpose of developing, by improved methods and increased facilities, that valuable lead which, even worked under the gigantic difficulties men without capital always encounter, has yielded fortunes to the prospectors. A large extent of valuable ground has been placed at the disposal of this Company, immediately adjoining the richest claims, the moderate price demanded by the. present holders 'being entirely payable .in paid-up and.half paid-up shares:- ' The estimated cost of opening these claims is £900 ; but as the tail r race will pass through auriferous ground for a considerable distance, it is confidently expected to repay the cost of its own construction. The ground once opened up, there is a large enough area to afford profitable employment for the next ten years. Hitherto the yield in the lead has averaged 100 ounces to the 12ft. x 15ft. paddock; but as the claims offered to this Company are situated immediately below the junction of another auriferous feeder, it is generally expected this yield will be largely exceeded. The Secretary and Broker shall have great pleasure in affording every information to hona fide investors. Applications for shares must be sent in to the Broker or Secretary on or before the 20th December next, accompanied with a deposit of 5s on every share applied for. 26a
