THE POLITICAL SITUATION.

We (Bruce Herald) understand the following letter, intended for Hia Honour the Superintendent, is being circulated amongst the mombera of tho Provincial Council for signature : — 1 Sir—We, the underaigned, being members of the Provincial Council of Otago, would most respectfully request your Honour to immediately convene a meeting of the Council. We. ask this for the following, amongst ot£er; jreasons :— FirHt—TheKew I«juid;Act haa to be brought into operation; and appointments made under its provisions tliat will exercise a permanent influence on the due ad mm intra tion of the .Apt, and on the management of the Waste Lands of the Crown in Otago.

Second. —A new Executive has been chosen by your Honour, and of the views of ita members regarding the administration of the Land Act we aro ignorant Third.—lt iB of the utmost importance, we believe, that land should be set asido for occupation by settlers,on tlio deferred payments system, and the Provincial Council ought to be consulted as to the locality, character, and quantity of the laud to to be set aside. Your Honour and the Executive Council have, moreover, no power to open any land, not at present open forsale, fcr settlement under this system. ""1-

Fourth. —Tliere is, we believe, an urgent necessity for at once bringiug the Highway Boards Empowering iAct into operation in the Province, and. this can only be done by a resolution of the Provincial Council.

Fifth.—lt was understood by the Council last session tliat a meeting should be held immediately after the prorogation of the Assembly, so tliat in future the meetings of Council might always be held immediately after the Assembly had been

prorogued. Sixth. —A sum of money has been voted by the Assembly foii subsidies to the Road Boards. This was^not calculated on by the Provincial Council afc its last sitting, and consequently*no resolutions were passed as to the manlier iv which it should be distributed. • We are, Sir, | Your obedient Servants,
