In the concluding portion of his speech last evening, Mr Gillies explained his conduct witli regard to Koiid Boardt Grants, tlio fireen Harp prosecution, ami various local matter*. He considered ifc unfair to give money to Road Boards from loans authorised only for railways and for other roprodrretive works. The money should' be given from revenuo. The present system wookl only lead tofalse confidence and waste. He was frequently applauded while speaking, and sat down amid loud cheering. A vote vt confidence wits passed una-mmously. Tho natives at Ohincnstri, in obedience to T« Hira's orders, have withdrawn, their land from the Lands Court. The Thames Advertiser thinks this step will foe fatal to the chance of opening tip the district for some time to come.

Mr Shepliard contradicts the telegram in the Evening Post, which stated that be expressed dissatisfaction with the present Ministry. He states that the fact is quite the contrary.

Oamahu, November Kith. Mr Steward, member of the House «ir" Representatives for Waitaki,. addressee! his constituents last night. He defended the public works and immigration policy. He stated that Mr Stafford's success wan owing to a carefully fostered feeling of uneasiness about the expenditure of the loans. It had been asserted that two millions were spent, and there wjik nothing to show for it; but nearly a uiiilum waa. now available, and for the other million* railway* surveyed, under contract, and completed could be shown. Ho said thafc the £28,000 put down as travelling expenses for Mr Vogel included travelling expenses for all Departments. He believed thoroughly in the immense resources off the country. He had no sympathy with those who said that the country was going; to-rum. A vote of thanks was passed and recalled. A vote of want of confidence was then proposed and seconded. A vote of confidence was proposed and seconded as an amendment. Neither motion vr&a. passed.
Timaru, November X7th. A man named Murdoch M'Lean, for oight years a shepherd at Snowdon Station, mysteriously disappeared on Thursday evening. Ho had a considerable siim of money upon him, and foul-play iat suspected. The police ate investigating the matter.
