We observe that tenders are being "received for the erection of Immigration Barracks at Port William, BtewartV Island. The designs for the*o buildings have lwen prepared for the General Government by Mr David J&jsi*, architect—

The central portion of the main building consists of officers' quarters, with all necessary stornai* room, «tc. On either side of this is an entrance hall, communicating with wings on the right and left— one of which will be the married people's quarters, the other being for single men. The other wing, which measures 63ffc. by 20ft., and" which, a» we have aaid, m to be occupied by single men, i» similar in its arrangements to the first described, with the .exception that the side* are not partitioned oft" into separate apartments, the entire space being left open. There in accommodation, above and below, for SO single men. The kitchen, which ia behitid the officers' «juarters, has a communication with the single men's quartern by means of a slide panel opening into a hicks lobby. The kitchen and washhou#e adjoining are provided with huge boilers, a brick oven, and every other requisite. Somewhat apart from the main building, and at ri^ht angles to the married people's quarters, i» another wing, '53ft by 20 feet, fitted up for the accommodation of 30 single women, viz., 2'A below, and 27 in the gillery above. The arrange- ] znents here are identical with those in the i single men's division.

T/iere is thus in the three wings described ample provision made for the residence of 150 persons, exclusive of the officials connected v/ith the establishment The arrangements for ventilation and heating are simple and complete. All the beds will be oti moveable stretcher*. no that they may be periodically removed outside and aired. When the whole or any portion of the bods are not in use, they will be placed in store, thus as fur ni possible preventing the introduction of the germs of di«*'a<se, or of vermin in the walls', Ac., of the dormitories, against •which, more especially in a wooden building of this description, every precaution must be taken.
