PORT CHALMERS ELECTION.
The polling for the election of a representative for Port Chalmers in the Provincial Council took place yesterday at the Court House, Port Chalmers, Mr Reid being fhe Returning Officer. Little -or no excitement was manifested through-, oiittho day. Six candidates had been nominated ; but one, Mr D. Miller, had retired from the contest, a notice to this ■ effect being posted up on the Court House door. There remained five. The poll was closed as usual at 4 p.m., and about half an hour afterwards the Returning Officer announced the result to be approxi- ■ niately as follows :— Hugh M'Dermid 66 Henry Dench. 58 Dr D. O'Donogmie 15. — M'Kenzie 8 w. a. d. Pitt ;;;;; o The informal votes numbered 4. Messrs M'Dermid, Dench, O'Donoghue, and M'Kenzie addressed the electors,thanking them for votes recorded. The official -declaration will be made to-day.
