Thursday, 18th April. (Before His Worship the Mayor)

Drunkennkss.—James M'Grath was fined ss, with the alternative of being imprisoned for 24 hours.

Charge of Theft. —William Hoare alias William Brown alias James Ross, who was arrested wearing marine's clothes the other night, was now charged with stealing money from the till of the Criterion Hotel. It appeared that no one being in charge of the bar for a time, on an employe going into it he found the accused near the door, and the till emptied of what had been in it. He gave chase to the accused, but did not succeed in catching him. On accused being afterwards arrested by .the Police, no money was found upon him. Mr Shapter, for the defence, contended that the evidence, which was circumstantial, was insufficient to prove the charge. Accused was discharged with a caution.
