THE VOLUNTEERS.
THE CADETS' RIFLE PBACTIC&
The first two squads of the Cadets—4o in number —have had target practice int third-class firing, lately. Considering it was the first time some of the boys had practised, the shooting was fair. The following are some of the leading scores:— First Squad :—Cadets Black and Morrison 53 each. Mackay 47, Smith 46, Barber 37, Wingfield 33, and Scoular 31. Second Squad :—This squad finished it* firing on Saturday, with a strong breeze across the range. The chief scores were-r— Cadets Eyre, Wilson, and Smith 34 eaclk. These are High School boys ; the boys attending the District Schools will soon, in their turn, have each an "outing" afc the range, when they will have an opportunity of distinguishing themselves. The arm used by the Cadets is the Provincial Government Lancaster, We trust that when the new Government arms arrive, the boys will be ready to gja through their class firing, and have a, somewhat better arm than ihe present to do it with. Those which they now use have been well worn by the senior companies, who returned them on account of their having had them in use for eight years. We are glad to see, from scores of company matches already published, that many of the ex-High School members have commenced the season's shooting with, fair prospects of taking a good position in. the Government matches. KIFLE hTATCH. A rifle match was fired on Saturday morning last, between the Dimedin Volunteer Artillery and the No. 2 Company Rifles, arising out of a challenge by the former Company. Tlie weather was very unfavourable^ a strong wind blowing from the right, preventing good shooting, arid heavyshowers of rain at times hiding the targets from view altogether. As the scores show, the Artillery won the match by 37 points. Gunner T. Muir is their highest scorer, with 48 ; Private Cowie being the highest forthe No, 2 Company, with 42. The conditions were—s shots, at ranges of 200, 500, and 600 yaids. Hythe position at the first range, and any position at the longer ranges ; Wimbledon targets ; ne sighting shots, &c The following are the scores :—- - ARTILLERY. 300 500 eOOTL Capt.
