PINE SILL AND NORTH DUNEDIN.
TO THE EDITOR. ; Site—ij wish to bring a little matter uftder -the notice of Mr Barnes, or anyone else who may be in ihe habit of taking an active part .iii forwarding the interests of the inhabitants of Leith. Ward, and the suburbs in that quarter, in the City Council. For some time past my attention has been drawn to the short distance that exists between the north end of George street and the Pine Hill road, and I think at the same time that that distance should no longer .be .left, as it is. By a trifling expenditure on the part of the Corporation, they would confer a great boon upon the settlers of the Pine Hill district and the North Dunedinites by forming a iootpathleading from the end of George street to the Pine Hill road. The present route to and from Dunedin is very circuitous, and this footpath, if attended to by the proper parties, would be found to be a great addition to the improvements now being carried on throughout the town. The distance between the two present roads is only about three or four chains, and is very smallindeed when it is put alongside the distance between the parallel of George street and the Water of Leith. Although a bridge would be required for the crossing of the Leith, yet it -would serve a better purpose than the one which was erected for the convenience of the -prisoners, and others going-to and from the Botanical Gardens. In the event of this footpath being made, it would be necessary for a protection to be erected, in the shape of a railing/upon either side, thereby keeping it from being destroyed by cattle. I hope, as oiie interested, that this subject will not be lost sight of. —I am, &c, North Dunediit.
• "September 30. P.S.—I also forgot to mention that since the Deacons' Court of Knox Church intend iiaerect a new church at the corner of Pitt and George streets, this path would be found ■to be of great service to the church going portion of the Pine Hill people.
