ACCIDENTS, ETC.
An accident of a very serious nature happened to Mr Stewart, locker at the Universal Bond, on the afternoon of the 10th inst. It appears that he was standing on the table of the recently erected hydraulic lift, and in ascending from one flat to another, hia foot, which slightly protruded over the table, came in contact with a crossbeam, and before assistance could be rendered, hia leg from the knee to the foot was crushed to such an extent that it is feared amputation will have to be resorted to. An inquest was held lately at the Lunatic Asylum by Mr W. D. Murison, J.P., on the body of Joseph Swan, who was admitted an inmate of that institution about six months ago. The jury decided that the cause of death was disease of the brain. From a Dunstan paper we learn that an accident, which nearly caused the drowning of six men, lately occurred on the Molyneux river. Mr Siedeberg and hia party were going on board the dredge vSalamander in a small boat, which by some means or ether got fouled in the gear and was capsized, precipitating the whole of the men into the water. Five men managed to scramble on board the dredge, but Mr Seideborg, failing to do so, got into the boat, which was waterlogged, and was swept down the river. He continued his novel and dangerous voyage for about a mile, when he was rescued by a boat belonging to a party of miners, who, as soon a& they saw the perilous position of Mr Siedoberg, put off to his assistance.
