THE CITY ELECTIONS.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir—l have heard many electors express great difficulty in selecting candidates out of the score who are presented to their choice, and yet I think a little thought will e«sily enable anyone to separate them into three classes. First. Those that are decidedly objectionable on account of their previous career. In this class I place five candidates —Messrs Birnea, Barton, Graham, M'lndoe, and Smythies. Second. Those whose return would not reflect any disgrace on the constituency, but who are essentially second rate men. Some of them have been tried before and found wanting in that superior intelligence and breadth of view and judgment which we look for in legislators; and the others are obscure, or at least unknown beyond their own particular circle. They are nine—Birch, Duncan, Fish, Howorth, Isaac, Jago, Reeves, Walter, Turlon. Third. Tried meu of educ itioa, intelligence, sound sense, probity, and with a large stake in the province. They are six— k Bathgate Mason CargUl Reynolds Cutten Tumbull.

Sir, this is no party view, but the calm judgment of one who desires that for once education, intelligence, and moral worth should be recognised in our community; and I put it to every elector whether they can conscientiously go past any of these six names, whoever else they may vote for.— 1 am, &c, Senex.
