THE COLONIAL RIFLE CONTEST.
We are in receipt of telegrams announcing the result of the shooting in the first, second, and fourth sets, and part of the third set of prizes. In the Ist set (judging distance), five shots in any position, at any range not exceeding 600 yards, at a target six feet square, with a centre four feet and bull's eye two feet, the following were the prize takers :—

Naval, Ofcago)... 17... 6 In the 2nd set (skirmishing) at a single target (6 by 2), centre 2 feet across, in any position, where the competitors had to fall in at extended order—a target at an unknown distance being opposite to each, acd where ten minu'es wae allowed for firing at such distances (advancing and retiring) as directed by sound of the bugla. Otago took all the prizes as follows :—

In the 3rd set, which is divided into two stages, no shooting is reported in the Ist stage In the 2nd atage, at 400, 500, and 600 yards—position, kneeling at 400 yards, and any at the other two—s shots at each range, without any trial shot Otago takes three prizes, Wellington one, and Westlahd one, viz.;—

In the 4th set—ranges, 20©, 500, and 600 yards—s shots at each range; position—standing at 200 yards, and any the remaining two. Target— at 200 yards, 6x2ffc., centre 2 feet across; at 500 and 600 yards, ox4ft, with the saaae centre as at the first range. No trial shot. The following were the five highest scorers :—

Easl Taieri 33... 9 0 Wood, Wellington 31 ... g 0 Adam, Tokoraairiro ... .. 29 ... 7 0 Reid, Danedia Artillery 29 ... 6 0 So far, therefore, as we are advised, Ofcago has taken ia prize-money L 124, Wellington L 32, Marlborough LlO, Westland hW, and Auckland Itf. For the information of our non-volunteer readers, we would mention that in order to ascertain ihe highest possible score in any match, multiply the number of shots by 4, which is the value of a bull's-eye. Until the whole of the prize firing is completed, it will be impossible to name the likely champion. Under the conditions that fortunate shot must be the highest aggregate scorer in the Ist, 2nd, 4th, sfch, 6fch, fth, and Bth sets, and in addition to what he may have won in the different sets he will receive a gold medal, LSO in money, and be entitled to wear the champion belt until the next annual competition. Should Lieutenant Goldie, the present holder of the belt, be the champion on this occasion, the, belt wiU become Ma property,
