MAYOR'S COURT.

Drunkenness and Disorderly Conduct, —James Qain was fined ss, or in default, sentenced to be imprisoned for 24 hours. Assault.—David Trickey wa3 charged with assaulting Christina Begbie, a girl nearly thirteen years old. It appeared that she was passing along Gaorge street between 6.30 and 7 p.m., on the night of the 7th inst., and when opposite the Robert Burns Hotel, the prisoner put his arm round her waist, and asked her to " come to the bush." She screamed, and ran away, prisoner following, She ran into the shop of Mr Sutherland, to whom she pointed out the prisoner. Mr Sutherland and another person detained the prisoner, who strove to escape. They sent for a constable to whom they gave him in charge. He was sentenced to two months' imprisonment.
Neglected Child.—Martha Howes was brought before the Court as being a neglected child. George Langley said he had seen her at Oaraaru during the past seven weeks. Her sister was a housemaid in a hotel there, and her mother lived at Hampdea. He had seen her sister on board the Wallace at 0 Amaru, and she knew that the girl was them oa boird. Oa arriving at Dunedin the child had nowhere to go to, and he accordingly brought her to the police office, where directions were given to have her temporarily provided for at a hotel. She was remanded to the Industrial School for a week.
