A SECOND JUDGE.
TO THE EDITOR,
Srit—lt is rumoured that a petition was presented to Mr Fox while here, asking that a second Judge should be appointed (or continued ?) to assist Mr Justice Chapman in the performance of his duties, and also to take upon him the duties now performed by Mr Wilson Gray. Before any such arrangement is made, I think the public are entitled to an answer to the three fallowing questions : — 1. Was Mr Justice Chapman asked whether he needed any assistance ? 2. Why wag not the legal profession asked whether their business was ever delayed during ths administration of Mr Justice Chapman, or conducted otherwise than to their entire satisfaction ?
3. Has Mr Wilson G-ray ceased to give satisfaction on the goldfields ?
1 think, Mr Editor, that the public are also entitled to know by whom this underground petition was signed, and by what right the petitioners claim to know the waats of suitors tetter than do those who are daily engaged in the Courts—and by what right they c^im to represent public feeling in Otago on this whole matter.
It is said that this petition has been signed by some of our representatives ; if this is so, I hope these gentlemen, for their own sakea, will answer these questions now, and not wait for the general elections, when they will be compelled to answer.—l am, &c, A Member op the Bae.
A SECOND JUDGE.
