THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT.
To (he hditor of the Otaoo Daily Times.
Sir,—l am not a little surprised to see that Mr Mouat, in his letter published, to-day in your paper, accuses mo of retailing a private conversation. Tbo coaversation to which ho refera was made pnMicly in a public, room, and in the presence of several persona besides my3clf. Mr Mouat accused the Provincial Government of jobbery, and stated that it was even carried on while he was in office, although he was not aware of it until he had left. I stated that I did not think it was proper for him to make such a vague statement, that he was bound to particularise, and thaf. as a representative of a constituency, if he knew of any jobbery in the Government of the Province, according to my opinion, he was bound to make it known to the Governmont. 1 also stated that T considered it would be my duty to mention 'his statement to the Government, in order that they might have an opportunity of preventing & recurrence of jobbery for the future, if any bad hitherto existed. I deem it unneees■ary to trouble your readers with any comments on the other portions of Mr Mouat's letter.—l am, <&<!, ■ William H. BjersrsoiDS. Dunedin, 28th Nov., 1868.
