CITY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the City Council was held yesterday, in the Corporation offices. Tho Mnyor (T. Birch, Esq.) presided, and thero were present Messrs Driver, Carrick, Thonoman, Dod3, Wilkinson, and Fish. Mr Fi.su, in moving tho adoption of the report, made explanations with regard to tiie action taken by the Committee in Mr Wilson's case. Tho report was adopted. MAUKETS. Tho following report of the Market Committee -was read and adopted :—

Yi'ur Committee beg to report, having canfullv tnkcn into consideration the matters remitted to them, the recommendations contained in tho Report of the Reserves Committee, undor date 28th October, on the snbl"ect o? erecting a market shed and weighbridge on tho Southern Market Reserve, and tho subject of markets generally. \'our Committee are agreed that a pnblic market or markets arc necessary for the city; arid they advise, as recommended by the Reserves Committee, that L 250 be voted for a market shed, 80ft x 30ffc (for hay and atraw) for tho Southern Reserve; that a

weigh-bridgo be forthwith erected on that Reserve ; and that a sum of LS"O be voted for the completion of proper sheds, the removal of tho bank of earth, and levelling the ground at the Octagon Market Rcaerve. Your Committee further recommend the Council to t-iko ut'»ps to scctire tho use of the Hali of the new Post Office Building for the purposes of an exchange. FINANCEThe report of the Finance Committee, I which had been left for consideration from tho previous week, was adopted. TUB WATER WORKS. Mr Frsn moved that a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Driver, Carrick, and Thoneman, be appointed to communicate with the Directors of tho Water Works, to ascertain if an offer for thts purchase on belialf of the City of the works would bo entertained. In doing so, he urged the important of tho purchase if it could be effected. Mr Cakriok seconded the motion. Mr Thonkman objected to being placed on tho Committee, as he was a shareholder of the Company. Mr Doiis protested against a motion of such importance being made, and without notice. It was against tho Standing Orders. After discussion, it was agreed that notice of motion should bo given, and the matter will be brought up next week. CORRESPONDENCE. Tho Directors of the Water Works Company wrote, offering to supply water to the drinking fountains at the Cargill monument free of charge, if tho Council would-givo access to thorn. Tho matter was referred to tho Works Committee. Reports from Inspectors "Barnes and Nimon were left to be dealt with by the Works Committee, as were the following communications :-—From the Secretary of Land and Works, referring to work in I Cumberland street ; from A. Mercer, t respecting state of footpath near his promises ; from George Cornwall, asking for an extension of a license ; from Henry Williamson, asking permission to erect a lamp in front of Mb premises ; from Mr J. W. Harris, offering to'give LlO towards filling up swamp; from James Newton, offering to supply korbing ; from John Jones, W. J. Hcnningham,. and Thomas Hudson, asking permission to execute certain works ; and from Inspector Nimon, referring to a nuisance in Maitland street and Manor place. Letters from MrE. M'Glashan, respecting an alleged encroachment on tho Town Belt; nnd from Mr Watson, ottering to lease ground in Rattray street, wore referred to tho Reserves Committee.

Tho Council waa adjourned for a week,
