Tlio three-masted schooner Rifleman, with a cargo of cattle and sheep from the Chatham Islands, sailed up yesterday forenoon, and continued her course towards Dnnedin, where she will discharge her stock. On this trip, the schooner sailed from Kangawa on the 13th instant, and had fine weaTher tip till Monday laat, when she enconntered a terrific gale from S.S.E., necessitating the battening-down of the hatches for twentylonr hours. During that time, she had the misfortune of losing 60 sheep out of 100 'which sho bad on board. The brig Ann and Maria, hence to the Chatham*, waa spoken with on the 15th. inst., in long. 177

E., lat. 4G.20 S. The barrjae Collingnrood. which wa» chartered hero to proceed to the Chithams to take passengers from thence to Taraoaki, had been in Rangaroa and Waitangi, and had proceeded to another settlement previous to the Rifleman leaving. Capt. Christian informs us that the natives on the Islands have lately lx-en assiduously practicing nfle shooting, making bullets, repairing firearrua of all description!?, making spears, &c, also that there is a largo quantity of ammunition 1 clonging to the natives, known to be buried in casks, and from appearances the whole of the Maoris seemed to be preparing for war. Such being the case, the General Government might take the hint, nnd keep a bright look out for the Collingwood at Taranaki, as it may be inferred that the 'Maori passengers will endeavour to take arras and ammunition with them.

The schooner Walrus, from Launceston, with timber and potatoes, arrived in harlxmr early yesterday morning, and berthed alonceidy the Port Chalmers Jetty, where she will discharge her timber for the graving dock. The Walrus left Launceston on th«s '{Ist ult., and experienced light north-east weather for tho firtt eight days. A gale trom the north-west waa then encountered, and tho veeael was hove-to for twenty four hours. During the gale she shipped large quantities of vrater, carried away bulwarks, galley, and shifted boats. The Holander waa mado on the 12th. Shortly afterwards she met w<th a heavy gale from S.S.E., which detained her for five days in Foveaux straits. Light variable winds followed to arrival.

The schooner Queen of the Isles, after nearly a seven weeks' absence, returned to pirt yesterday forenoon, bringing from Picton a cargo of sawn timber, consigned to her agents, Messrs R. B. Martin and Co. Mio remained at tho anchorage off Otaheite Point waiting for the tide for a few h >urs, and th- n ' proceeded towards Danedin. Her cargo will be landed at the Stuart street Jetty. The schooner sailed from Port Chalmers on tho 3rd ultimo, and had heavy weather on the passage to Hokitika, where she arrived on the 13th; discharged cargo, and left on the 2nd inst, with a fine fair wind, which carried her into Picton harbour on tho 4th ; louled her present cargo, and sailed for Dnnedin on tho 13th, making tho passage through Qncen Charlotte's Sound. Light N. W, winds wero experienced to tho Kaikouras, then bafiling weather to off Banks Peninsula, wbicn she reached on tho 15th, v/hen a strong S S. W. gale set in, gradually hauling round to 5.5.8., with a heavy uca. The vessel waa kept head reaching off and on under low canvas until the fcL lowing day. There being no appearance of tho galo abating, Captain Patterson bore up for Port Levy, off which she anchored on tho same evening. On Tuesday, the gale hauled round to H.W. and moderated, and Bhe again got underway. After rounding Banks Peninsula, light N. E. weather was experienced until the afternoon of the 19th, when tho wind suddenly shifted to 8.5. E., and blew frenh fora few hours. At 4 a.m. yesterday it veered round to tho N.E., and prevailed from that quarter until arrival.

The cutter Advance, from Waikouaiti, arrived yesterday forenoon, and passed up to Dunedin.

The p.s. Wallace sailed from the Port on her usual Oamaru trip, at 10 a.m. yesterday.

A beautiful six-ton yacht has lately been built by Mr Joseph Swan, of Port Chalmers, to tho order of Mr Mason, of Deborah Bay. She was launched on Thursday evening, and cbrißtencd tho Koyal Alfred.

The number of snags which the last fresh brought down the stream, have beon causing some iri?onvenience to vessels lying alongside the wharf. Tho Corporation, as conservators of the river, with praiseworthy promptitude, havo sot on a gang of men with the proper appliances to clear these obstructions away. The men, who appear to be well up to their work, are under tho orders of Capt. Turnbull, who has kindly consented to superintend tho work. Several very ugly Bnags were removed yesterday.—West Coast Times, 12th inst SHIPPING TELlsGßAMS.—Yksteiiday.
