Tho P.N.Z. and A.KM. Co.'s s.s. Tararua, from Melbourne via Bluff Harbor, arrived in Port at 8 a.m. yesterday. She left Hobaon's Bay on tho afternoon of the 2Sth ult., and cleared Port Phillip Heads at 8 p.m. A lia-d S.W. gale, with tcrriiio sea, was experienced during tho whole passage to tho Bluff, where she arrived at 2 p.m. on the 2nd inst ; discharged 80 tons of cargo, and sailed n^.'in at 4 p.m. on the 3rd, and arrived off the Heads at 3 a.m yesterday. Sho sails again t-.j-day with the outward Panama ToM.\a for trnusliipmcnt to tho Company's screw-steamer ICaikoura, nt Wellington. The puraer has, with his usual courtesy, supplied us with our Melbourno files. The s.s. A'hambra. hence to Melbourne via JNorthcra and West Coast Porta, was pauseil by the Tararua between Hobson's Bay and Port Phillip Heads. 'I'he a.B. Tawroa mturned from Port Molyncux on Wednesday night, and steamed up to Uunedin early yesterday morning._ The frienda of passengerH by the Caribou, ■will bo pla'l to bear that the ship, after being for some time detained in Ltmlanh Bay, through stress of weather, got safely to sea. The Pilot left her on tho 7th March, 120 miles W.S. W. of s illy, with a favorable wind, and everything g'>uig on welt on board.

SHIPPING SUMMARY

, Since tho despatch of the English mail via Suez on tho 16th tilt, tho shipping business " Foreign" has almost been at a standstill, -wlbiie tno coasting traffic has boert unusually brisk, During the period elapsed, 22 vessels have arrived, and 2(5 have taken their departure ; tho inward registered tannage being 5"04 and tho outward 5945. Amongst the arrivals are the Niphon, from London. She arrived at tho Heads on the Ist instant, but owing to strong south-west galen

klks has not yet been able to make tho harbor. Signals were made that all were •well on board. Tho brig Cratgcllaebie, from the Mauritius, with sugars, arrived on tho 2l»t ult. Through an error in her chronometer, she had a very narrow es- ape of whipwreck on tho vest coast cf Stewart's Island.

The departure* include the ship Warrior Quoin, for London, on the 20th ult, with wool, gold, ami upwards of 4<> passengers ; and the clipper schooner Banshee, on the .'JOth nit., for tho Fijis, with a valuable cariro, and a full complement of paHnengcrs. Of the ships in port, the X P. Bouwrie, the lout of this season's wooi-sh'pj. has close on 2800 bales on board, and is announced to «ail for London on tho 10th inst. Her pasBtnger accommo<latioij is pretty well tilled up, and with cargo she is expected to be a fuil ship. Tho Maria, fivm Glasgow via Bluff Harbor, has discharged her inward cargo and finished ballasting. She is oxpicted to sail to-day for onts of tho islands in the Pacific, there to load guano, and return to New Zealand in time to load wool Home next season.

The Celestial Qaecn, which brought out the firwt direct shipment of salmon ova to New Zealond, has nearly discharged her cargo. After ballasting, she proceeds to Newcastle, there to load coal for Ch ns. Tho Harbor Company's steam-tug Gcelong is undergoing a thorough overhaul, to make her every way suitable for the requirements .of Port Otago. She will be ready for ser vice this week. Tho Company's steamer Wallace, which is no*acting as a tug. will then run regularly to Oamaru—making three trip* a week.

The passenger traffic since tho ICth ult., ahowa a total arrival of 304, of whom 202 landed and remained in tho Province. The departures for tho same period, show a total of -1! 1, of whom 201 left the Province. The now floating dock building at Port Chalmers is nearly ready for launching ; during the past week, a numbor of hands have been employed caulking her, the oakum u*ed being that spun from the tow of the nativo flax. Tho dock is 171 feet in length, and will, when launched, prove a grfsat boon to tho shipping community. Anew schooner, the .Tano Andcrnon, th* largiajt yet built in the Province, wa* lately bunched at Waikava, and is expected to arrive with a cargo of timber in a few days. She is intended for the coasting trade, and will be commanded by Captain Falconer, late of the Caledonia.

Tho Kakanui Kivcr, a few miles south of "'amaru, has lately been made available for a shipping port, tho river having beenentored by tho coasters Midlothian and Defiance, both of whichdisoharged and took in cargoes. The masters of the above vcsnela report a good entrance for craft drawing five or six feet.

The P.N.Z. and A.R.M. Company1* stcam-sh'p Tararua keeps up her ivputition as a reliable boat. She left this pore on the 2nd instant, and has been round the Ntw Zealand porta, making very rapid passage*^ and finally, lowing the Bluff with th-; English mails for transmission per Bombay on tlic J7th instant. ho« made a passage which deserve« recording. From the day ot her leaving the Bluff to sighting the northern portion of Tasmania she never had an opportunity of setting canvas, the wind being dead ahead and very strong, and the sea fearfully higli. It is a matter of congratulation to the company that they carry out their contract under such circumstances, but it is a noted fact that the Tararua always gets in to time, even in tho face of such adverse winds as were experienced on tho present occasion.—Melbourne Aye.
