DUNEDIN RACES.

Skcoxd L> y~Saturday. Tlie attendance on tho course, in spite* of the hot wind blowing violently, was greater than on Friday.. Over twelve hundred spectators were "present, including many ladies^ Every available conveyance, from the donkey cart io the six— in-hand, was put in requisition. So faras tho arrangements were concerned,, every credit is" due to the stewards for attending to the comfort of tho visitors* and thoir straightforward* management of tho races. But wo venttcce to suggest that improvements might be* made in two respects. First, it is desirable that the public should, as early as possible, b& informed of tho names of horses when scratched for a coming race, and that immediately on the tortniration of the nice their names should bo taken off the board. Through neglect of this precaution, several persons were led into error. Secondly, it would be convenient if figurescould be exhibited at tho finiah of a, race, corresponding with tho numbers oifc. the race cards signify ing the horses placed. Thia is regularly attended to on the ractf courses in England.

Tho first nice was a Handicap' Steeplechase. Tho fences were very flimsily fixed, arising, most probably, from the difficulty of driving them firmly into the hard ground. Dragoon and Lottery start&d as winners, the latter apparently the favorite. Don Pedro, after making several ineffectual attempt* at the firat fence, wan wisely pulled up by his jockoy, thus leaving tho race between the two favorites. In the next race, for tho Dunedin Cup, Mr Wentworth's horse Firetail, Mr Dela^ main's Belle of the Isle, and Mr Parker's" Master Kowo. wero scratched, leaving six.to contest the race. Lander bolted very" soon after tho start, and was pulled up of£ the course t>y his jockey. Miss King was. tho favorite, 2 to I being freely taken on Miss King and Lander against the field. After Lander bolted, tho race was a complete gift to Miss King. For the GrandL Stand Handicap, Firetail ran first, cloßely followed by Virginia ; and Golden Cloud, who was third, did not make so good a show as was anticipated. In tho SellingKaco, Bobbie Bums won cleverly, beating the Clown and Schoolboy. Tho Consolation; Stakes wero won by Star of tho South. Mr W. C. Webb's brown mare Miß& King, that won tho Dunedin- Cup, was exceedingly well ridden by Goodyer, who desci'vedly earned tho gold-handled, whip promised the rider of tho winning horse, by Messrs Court and J. L. HalL It is exceedingly gratifying to be able to say that no accident of any description occurred either on the course or on the road. The weather was not sopleasant as might have been desired, and those who waited to see the Hack Race, which was again won by Mr J, Stevenson's Crucifix, got thoroughly wet in consequence of the sudden rain that fell socopiously in the evoiring. Tho results of tho races wore as follow :— Handicap Stekj'lk Cua.sk of 80 boys.,. added to a Sweepstake of .1 so vs. each ; nomination. 5 aovs. ; distances, about three miles, over such country aa tho Stewards; may appoint.
